You're over-emphasising Caldwell's ability. Your word choice makes him sound a lot better than what he actually was. His positional sense was often lacking which led to mistakes that cost us goals.

I appreciate what Caldwell did for us but I wouldn't take him back.

agreed caldwell sprinting out of the back to try to make a tackle out of position often left the back 4 exposed

Nothing against Caldwell. After a rough start, he'd been pretty good in his 2nd and 3rd season. Still he was prone to his usual mistakes. Also our defense and particularly Caldwell (with an own goal) got slaughtered against Benfica and other opponents in Europe.

Nonetheless he was a very good and useful SPL defender.

I dont know if Kelvin Wilsons the answer but I dont see why we cant just go out and pay for a top defender, just one, not two necessarily.

the problem with big maj is... he cant head the ball to one of his own players and

he doesent impose himself on opponents.

Big Bobo used to scare the * out of opposition strikers.

I too can be skeptical about maj, sometimes he looks the real deal, solid defensively and the next game he can do something really stupid that completely bellies his age and experience, if celtic are to go forward, we need to improve our defence.

I realise we broke the clean sheet record but in the end that mattered for nought because we lost the league, celtics defence has always been our weakest link and for so many years we haven't tackled the problem sufficiently, we have bought stop gaps if you like but never solved the problem.

This summer we need to attempt to solve that problem and bring in a younger better version of maj, strong in the air, reasonably experienced and decent pace. That costs a bit of money and its what we thought we were getting with loovens but sometimes you need to spend that little bit extra on the defence to make sure we get it sorted. Spending just over half a million on a defence to win a league isn't enough and that problem needs to be sorted this summer.

Maj is definitely our best central defender at the moment. As someone said before, he came into our side when we were a defensive mess and sorted it out. He's no Ronaldo or Messi on the ball but what he is is just a no nonsense defender - exactly what we needed. In the cup final, remember how he was helping out Izzy at left back with the rapid (Humphreys?) lad on their right wing? Thought he was decisive and powerful that day. Hand ball thing was a slip up, but at least hes not passing the ball to their stikers in the box like a certain G. Caldwell and G. Loovens used to do...

I thought he was everywhere at the back and had a great defensive game - one of our best players on the day! But I do agree with you that at times he can be a liability - just look at his booking, his own stupid pass got him into trouble. We can all see he is no ball player, but count the amount of times he intervened especiually in the box! I think he has done a job for us but hopefully we can bring in better for the new season :50: HAIL HAIL

I have very little confidence in the guy. I admit, he's been at times a positive and steadying influence on whoever he's partnered at the back but it seems to me that there have been far more times where he's put the team under pressure with poor decisions. Whether it's a clearing header going direct to the opposition, a back-pass that's too short or to a man that's already tightly marked or just * up a clearance, I think there've been far too many instances of him causing more problems than he solves. I think he'll be a useful back-up however because with his experience he should play alright at short notice, ie. won't need a run of games to produce the same form as coming off the bench. Having said that, I wouldn't be sad to see him go.
