Thompson still recalls Sutton’s last day at Parkhead. “He just picked his boots up out of the dressing room and walked out of the kitman’s door, out the back there, and didn’t come back in again,” he says. “It was a sad way to see him go really, but that’s what happens in this game. It’s a shame. You can give great service like Chris and then not have any closure at the end of it.” Spoken in bleak tones, which suggest his own eventual exit could end up being much the same.

A really sad way to go but he kept on getting himself injured if he doesn't stay fit and be able to play he can't stay but it's not the same with thompson and am sure that we could really use thompson with his long balls that we need to give kenny miller the goals and VOH when he cames back

I think we could actually start playing thompson again yes mcgeady does score but thompson can get like kenny miller to start scoring and zurawski aswell with a long pass before he goes offside

Jesus wept, my heart bleed for poor ole multi millionaire Thommo.
Reading between the lines, Thommo attributes Strachan choosing Maloney and McGeady ahead of him for their pace and skill, imagine that, why not stick with the old carthorse who's delivery and passing ability have been in free-fall since Seville.
Personally I think the writing was on the wall for Thommo for 2 seasons after Seville, he was torrid, and only got a regular place in the team because he was one of MON's favourites.
As far as the Strachan era, his obvious lack of pace and fitness didn't do him any favours, and I think after his red card at Ibrox Strachan knew he couldn't trust Thommo's dodgy temprament.
His age didn't play a factor, look at Lenny!
Again Thommo admits he couldn't find a club to match his wages, surely by this stage in his career he has accumulated more than enough cash, if he had any pride he would have moved on.
People might think I'm being harsh on Thommo, but the man has raked in millions in the past 3-4 years without really giving anything in return.
Dry your eyes mate, away and count your money down south in one of the lower divisions.

Read it fine mate. He would have been asking for a payoff from Celtic of the difference between what Celtic were paying them and the amount a new club would be paying him.

Basically, he would rather pick up the extra 250-500k a year for the last 2 years of his career than earn still 500-750k and get to play 1st team football in the EPL.

When he's already earned millions from football I think it's sad that he'd rather sit up here squeezing as much cash as he can out of his career than squeeze as much football and glory as he can out of it.

It's his choice, but i'm sure in a few years time he'll look back at his decision and regret it.

The sad fact is that we're talking about a player who's had three great seasons, followed by two poor seasons, and two more seasons sitting in the stands.
He's had more poor seasons than great, could have left the club with hero status at the same time as MON, he chose to hang around and collect a healthy wage whilst contributing next to nothing in return.
Would have been more dignified if he'd just left the club without this poor me article in the papers.

O'Neill loved to dole out the money and to give Thommo this price and this length of contract..when the whole world could see he and the team were slowing down..we're just paying the price for O'Neill and his way to keep players happy..pay them more even when they are too old and slow

O'Neill didn't know how to produce his next team...unlike Fergie who has produced many..not all good
