[Question] HDMI Laptop/TV

Alrite lads looking for a bit of help here for Christmas i got a Samsung RV510 laptop and in the next few weeks finally got enough to get a HDTV and can't wait but one of the main things i was looking forward to was streaming films if that's what you call it to my TV from Laptop but for some reason my HDMI port is just blocked off in like a rubber cover impossible to get it out and i have been told that basicly my laptop doesn't have a HDMI even though it says it has one.

So i was just wondering if theres any other way i could still connect my laptop to the TV (so i can see on the TV what i can see on the laptop) and will it still be decent quality etc. cheers for any help.

What make & model is your laptop? if it says you have a hdmi slot i dont know why its not there

The other option is a vga to hdmi cable but you wont get as good quality as hdmi to hdmi

 

Samsung RV510 mate says HDMI and has a port but it's just got a sort of rubber thing capped inside it i have a vga port i think is it a blue/purple colour ?

 

From a quick google it appears that your model of laptop doesn't have a HDMI port, which is a shame. If you're set on using your laptop for streaming to your TV then sell it and buy one with a HDMI out.

Alternatively, buy a small media center - something like this will do the trick

You can either buy a HDD seperately and plug it into that - or just stream over your network, like this -

Laptop>Router>Media Extender (the thing I just linked)>TV

It sounds difficult but there are plenty of forums filled with people willing to help out.

 

Yeah VGA is blue usually... about a dozen pins. If you have an old PC monitor you could probs use the cable from that. Although they're cheap as anything to buy new.

Take a picture and upload it of the HDMI port.. they might have different versions of your laptop with different motherboards, so if the motherboard inside yours doesn't have HDMI capability they might have just covered the chassis port up with something..

Oh one more thing, if you go for VGA then you will also need a 3.5mm headphone jack cable because VGA is video only unlike HDMI which carries video and audio.

 

Cheers for the help lads usually good with computers and such but all this HD stuff is pretty new to me i know that my laptop is HD (plays youtube HD etc.) but like you have said i just think it's a different model and maybe you need to pay more to get the HDMI and about that box thing that's far to pricey for me bud, so after looking it up i deffo have a VGA port and my laptop takes headphones and aux lead etc. so im just wondering if i can still do something about it.

The VGA wire thing to connect it does it have like say a normal red,yellow & white scart on the end of it or does your TV also need a VGA port thanks for the help lads.

Use the vga port, as good, for streaming as the hmdi but with out the sound.

 

Hey man, yeah looks like that port is covered because the model you have doesn't have HDMI.

The VGA cable looks like this at both ends..

You need to double check your TV has a VGA port, pretty much guaranteed to if you've got a brand new TV, sometimes they are called "PC" ports.
Let me know if you don't have a VGA port on your TV.

 

If you dont have vga on the tv just use this

Should deffo have one we are buying it from a family member mate don't know much about it apart from it's a belter haha 48" HD etc. so i'm assuming it's a new one more looking forward to playing the xbox on it really can't see * all on the telly at the minute.. my laptop has a VGA but everything else is just USB and headphones will this be a problem with audio from what i gather VGA is video only ? cheers mo chara

 

Yeah if it's a new HDTV then it will defs have a VGA port.
Yep as you say it's video only, so you need a 3.5mm aux cable for the audio. So it looks like a headphone jack at both ends. They're cheap and you can get different lengths.

So when you want to hook up the laptop, plug the VGA cable into both ports and then plug the aux cable into the headphone socket on your laptop and there will be an "AUX IN" or "AUDIO IN" port on the side or back of the TV; not the headphone socket on the TV obviously but something that looks like it.

You won't have to disconnect anything for your Xbox because that'll be HDMI or component (red, white, yellow)..

Mate, you can stream your movies from your laptop to the xbox using a program called TVersity. You can download it here

This will give you the sound as well as the picture and also works wirelessly if you have a wireless router and wireless xbox thingy.

Been using it for a few years.
