The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011,
their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.

The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any
health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.

It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about
the band and have it stay that way.

Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible
support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and
    incredible career.

Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from
The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular
    channels.

Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is
seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has
created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those
creations, with their feelings considered greatly.

With that in mind the band have this to say:

“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong
to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is
that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your
involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

    Sincerely,
    Meg and Jack White

Shame i really loved these guys the amount of noise they could create from only 2 people. The live at Blackpool concert was / is outstanding. Similar to bands that followed such as death from above 1979 and the black keys

Doesn't suprise me at all .A lot of these guitar bands that emerged in the early 00's i.e The Hives,The Strokes,BRMC,The Kills, etc ... all seem have been a bit faddish and lack the staying power of acts like Nick Cave,Tom Waits,Bob Dylan,Neil Young,Elvis Costello,The Rolling Stones etc... who have all had devoted support for over 30+ years

Great band I seen them a few times. When I saw them at the secc I was standing in front of Keira knightley and Adrian brody and half way through the gig jack White got hit with a shoe.

i know what you mean. i think for all the early 2000 bands image and trends were a lot more important to them and at times eclipsed their music. whereas all the older bands were trend setters themselves and evolved as a band through the years gaining classic status

The White Stripes will have staying power, they will remain a classic band regardless of whether they release new music, what they have released will remain classic.

The Strokes are about to release a new album, these are the two main bands who started the garage rock thing of the early 2000s. You can't lump quality artists in with the * imitators of their sound that came after. That's like comparing Oasis with The Courteeners to use a very TC example, or Green Day with Fall Out Boy or Rage Against The Machine with Limp Bizkit.

Could'nt relly get past that raw sound of theirs I knew there were some great tracks in there but I think they needed to take the workload off Jack , a five piece would have the makings of a great band.A bit like Neil Young and Crazy Horse/Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds/Elvis Costello and The Attractions etc.. Meg White was a poor drummer and the whole were they /weren't they schtick didn't have legs
