A concert by a group described as the 'world's number one Celtic band' has been cancelled due to safety worries.
Irish band Charlie and the Bhoys were due to play at the council-run Civic Centre during the St Patrick's Day weekend.
The planned concert led to an angry reaction on Rangers' fans football forums across Scotland, with one contributor to a site publishing contact details for all councillors in East Kilbride - asking fans to call them and demand the show be stopped.
Today (Wednesday) South Lanarkshire Council announced that it was taking steps towards cancelling the show.
A South Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman said: “We have taken steps to cancel this let purely in the interests of public safety following a number of expressions of concern and have arranged a meeting with the hirer to clarify the position.”
The show was described on the Charlie and the Bhoys' website as its Lisbon Lions night .
Set to take place on Friday, March 18, it is believed that the protests from Rangers fans originated on the fanzine forum, Follow Follow, where fans urged those against the gig to email or phone East Kilbride councillors.
Over the weekend, all East Kilbride councillors received several emails asking them to stop the gig going ahead and linking them to the band’s performances on YouTube.
One contributor to Follow Follow said: “Just shows when presented with facts and straightforward emails in numbers, councils - no matter how much they want something - have got to follow the laws of the land the same as everyone else.
"Let’s take this further and get them binned from anywhere in Scotland.”
On the Charlie and the Bhoys Facebook page, the band posted a comment at 5.30pm regarding the cancellation.
The statement read: "We have done these Celtic/Irish nights all over the world but only seem to get trouble when we're in the West of Scotland.
"This was a St Patrick's day concert for the Celtic fans and Irish descendents in East Kilbride.
"It looks like the faceless people who write on forums can control a council."

Can they get any lower, you think we should all send e-mails and footage of the D.O.B during there walks and see if that gets banded.

However if we did this then they would just run to brussels again as they did last year when dumbarton council banned the march due to saftey fears but the court of human rights over turned it.

    Again bunch of D.O.B

front page of the EK News today, I was going to post about it earlier but was too busy complaining to the council myself

I have drawn their attention to the considerable number of members of that particular forum who invite us to "go home" and its vile bigoted content, and that if they succumb to the demands of a fans forum, particularly that hive of scum and villanny, then they leave themselves open to complaint from every tin pot organisation and mouthpiece for the deranged.

It is a private concert to be held for ticket buying clients, therefore, if you dont like you dont go. There were supposed to be at least two lisbon lions in attendance (from mixed backgrounds?)

I have also pointed out that it costs no money to police a private event, but in the interests of fairplay, I would like a breakdown of the costs for policing Orange Walks in the south lanarkshire area as it comes out of my taxes.

This is madness, but if the local residents complained (there are none withing 500 yards of the civic centre) I could see the point of investigating but to ban on the THREAT of DISTURBANCE by the most intolerant bigoted trash that ever walked this planet is beyond comprehension

    just to point out again

the safety worries are in relation to the threat of distrubance by the intolerant bigots from swallow swallow who are complaining

they should be issued with a threat that if they come anywhere near and start any of their pish they will be arrested

    problem solved

But its fine for the Orange bands to parade about past peoples homes, making people not want to leave there house or walk by it incase youre accused of being a taig,or bean rattler.Counter this with an actual justified complaint about the Orange Order.Get Celtic supporters accross all the forums to email and write letters to councils and well play the game these hun * obviously want to.

    utter madness

lets get this straight; it got cancelled because the bigots on FF fear that their gig would encourage them to sectarian violence? by whom exactly? the huns who go to a Charlie and the Bhoys gig!!?? basicaly saying if theres no gig there'll be no bigoted incidents by huns??

    * sake, the world has gone mental when the cretins on FF can dictate to an elected council what gigs can and should go on; and yet we're asked to respect the 'right' of the orange marches to spread their sectarian hatred every summer??

    madness!!

    Dead on. * disgusting.

So, that means the organised legalised breaches of the peace and hate displays called Orange Walks should be banned too. Right?

    Aye. * right.

Really looking forward to this aswell and these scumbags go and ruin it. I bet my top dollar that the council will have no problem letting them animals do their orange walks up and down the streets of EK. If this was any other religion/faith and there had been complaints made, they would be laughed off by the council but for some reason its a different story when it comes to Celtic/Irish/Catholics.

    * Scotland !!!
