Facebook 'kill threat' at Celtic manager Neil Lennon

    Tuesday, 18 January 2011 1:07PM GMT | Sport, Football

A Facebook page making menacing threats to Celtic manager Neil Lennon appears to have been removed by the website.

Last night Facebook said that the page named 'Let's get 100,000 people that want to see Neil Lennon get shot’ did not violate their terms and conditions and it was merely ‘distasteful’ but not a serious threat.

The creation of the page follows bullets being posted from Northern Ireland to Lennon as well as winger Niall McGinn recently.

Northern Ireland politicians condemned the webpage yesterday that had attracted over 600 members. Users following the page had left threatening and abusive messages towards Lennon.

SDLP MLA Dolores Kelly has said those responsible for the creation of the Facebook page should be charged under hate crime legislation.

“The SDLP has called on Facebook to shut this page down immediately. This sectarianism must not be tolerated in our community and those responsible for setting up this sinister campaign should be pursued under hate crime legislation," she said.

“The warped individuals who established this site after Celtic players were sent bullets in the post last week, are a stark contrast to Neil Lennon- a positive role model and a fine ambassador for Lurgan, who has given so much pleasure to people locally, across our island, and indeed, throughout the world.

“I have contacted police and have urged them to thoroughly investigate who is responsible for the creation of this site.

“Unfortunately hate crime legislation here has proven to be weak in the past and is something which the Justice Minster needs to urgently address,” she added.

The webpage in question does not appear on Facebook searches today and appears to have been removed.

Everyone that "liked" that page deserves every thing that's coming their way and more. Slow painful deaths.

Let's be honest here, these threats have got sweet * all to do with Twitter and everything to do with the fact that he's an Irish Catholic from the o6.

i'm done with facebook. any site that feels it's ok to leave this sort of garbage up is not for me. they should be stepping up and stating that this is unacceptable. instead they patronize us by saying it's just distasteful. sorry, cheerio facebook. havent' been on it in ages anyway

Aye of course the threats are un-needed and cowardly but does it suprise you?

Lenny is the manager of this club now and with that will be under the spotlight like never before.

I just dont think Lenny having facebooks and twitter help things and just gives these cowards a platform too spout their hate and abuse.

That being said the people abusing Lenny (and McCourt, etc) are bitter cowardly *. I just hope they dont put off Lenny from doing the job he's supposed too. Hes the manager now not a player like before - with that comes a certain amount of resposiblity IMO.

I e-mailed the press about that as spreading sectarian hatred. Did I get a reply..? Have we seen it mentioned in the gutteroids?

It is what it is mate - thats why im not gonna get too upset about it.

Hatred and taunts arent anything new between the OF and its employees but the Rangers' fans do seem to be a particular bitter bunch IMO.

I can't really defend that song at all, as much as we all hated Nacho Novo it was more because of his delusions of grandeur with all the 'I said No' business and shooting his mouth off to the Daily Record every single week.

There is something deeper, more ethnic to this hatred of Lennon. No way he would get this amount of bile directed towards him if he was English.

The likes of Paddy McCourt has done absolutely nothing to antagonise anyone yet the amount of 'scruffy, pikey, tattie muncher' I hear in reference to him. I bet they would * their trunks if Paddy did come out and actually say something overtly Irish Nationalist.
