And why would you be insisting on proposing Irish stereotypes/nonsense Irish celebrities in a thread about the Ireland manager?

What point are you trying to make? Do you even know, or are you just lashing out at mention of the words "Ireland" and "Irish"?

Blinker got called up while at Feyenoord in 1993 and Petta never actually got a cap for Holland. I would agree that O'Neill is very good at getting the most out of average players though.

The media seem to have latched on to O'Neill as their preferred candidate - but has O'Neill ever publicly expressed any interest in the job?

O'Neill has gone out to 11/10 with Paddy Power despite being as short as 1/2 with SkyBet.

Amazing. Again: has he even been asked by any journalists if he's interested?

Can't believe media presumptions are driving this as far as they are.

Don't think O'Neill fancies being an International manager tbh I remember him giving an interview where he said he enjoys being out there every day, It will be Big Mick McCarthy I am calling it now

Id like to see this team.

    Westwood
    coleman clark o'shea wilson/o'brien
    mc carthy gibson
    mc geady hoolahan/ireland brady
    long/stokes.

not sure on what manager though.MON would get the team motivated but I dont know what tactics he would use! That team could play some stuff! What you's think? I actually think stokes is better than long in shooting, passing and the ability to make things happen in and around the box but long is faster and excellent in the air.

He hasn't said anything in the media. However, when you look at the potential candidates, Martin O'Neill is the only one who stands out as a 'big name' replacement. I don't think the FAI can get away with just settling for McCarthy or Brian McDermott. Also, the fact that Martin O'Neill is a top class Irish manager out of work at the moment, it all points towards him being the man who will be offered the job first.

Whether he takes it or not is another story, but his odds being so short will be because he fits the bill to be the man offered the job first.

I'm sure Trap got some money from the FAI on his way out...they won't want to dish out anymore than they have to. O'Neill has no contract, he's a preferred choice, I'm sure.

He received compensation, yes, but he agreed to take a cut price deal. :50:
O'neill is the only unemployed front runner. He's also the best manager of the front runners by an absolute mile.

Slaw, O'Neill may be the obvious candidate but if he's not expressed interest is this not all a bit massively presumptuous - or at the very least a self-fulfilling prophecy?

What if the media had named Fenlon as the obvious choice first of all (after all, he's been mentioned as being on the verge of the sack at Hibs for most of last six months, and he has history with the U21s)? Would he then be asked?

Don't get me wrong, I would be happy with MON as Ireland manager, but the power of the media and bookies in this instance, who have basically appointed MON before Trap was even out the door, is striking.

Par for the course though that nowadays. If a mangerial vacancy is open for a while ( or even if it is not sometimes) it is not unusual for 5 or 6 people to backed into very short prices for a job.

I am pretty sure at one point O'Neill was backed at odds on to be the next Man Utd manager as were other managers. Redknapp was also a great favourite with the Brit media to be the England manager and this was reflected in the odds.
