Let's start talking ourselves up ffs. Yes the EPL is a great league with some very rich clubs, but we can still compete with the wages at most of the clubs in England, and we can also guarantee European football, plus we're always challenging for trophies. Hopefully Gravesen isn't just motivated by money and wants to win medals, play in the CL and be hero worshipped by the greatest supporters in the world!

We can talk ourselves up all we want, infact we dont need to, the clubs name does that for us.

But that didnt stop Bellamy going to Blackburn, it didnt stop JFH going to CHARLTON!!, we have lost out on a lot of decent names over the summer (and previous ones too), its not a dig at the club, its a dig at the nature of transfers.

We simply cant compete with big earners.

If Tommy G moves to us then it shows he is truly a winner and wants to compete but I simply cant see it. There is no evidence of this sort of player at all in Europe these days. Especially ones from outwith the British Isles.

The 2 players quoted are * mercenaries. Both have had more clubs than tiger * woods. I said we can compete with most EPL clubs wages, but Bellamy went to Liverpool and the club weren't willing to pay JFH ridiculous amounts and rightly so.

I am sorry mate I dont share your optimism.

Strachans came out at said it himself.

Our top earner just now is probably Bobo Balde subject to what Stans new deal got him.

At the moment our priority is to wipe out the debt which as per the financial results means we reduce costs, the probably biggest outgoing figure on our balance sheers is players wages, the club have been and will continue to budget very strictly on it.

These English clubs, regardless of their status in the EPL receive a bucket load of money from Sky, they receive an even more riduclous amount from the FA for their standings in the EPL which secures most the clubs long term futures subject to their transfer activity.

You know the status of the Scottish game as well as I do mate, the games on the decline which has an immediate impact on the money we and other clubs bring in.

Your kidding yourself on if you think we can compete against any, if not all EPL clubs in the salary market.

Petrov is by far the highest paid player in Scotland not just Celtic, on a wage of approximately 35-38 grand a week. You tell me how many EPL clubs pay more than that?

Agent is just talking him up (to get him a good deal in the EPL)

50K a week (we'll NEVER EVER pay that for wages)

It's all just bullshite to keep us talking about "so called" signing targets :38:

How many have celtic been linked to ?????

Steven Gerrard - close to 100k per week
Michael Ballack - 120k per week
Rio Ferdinand - reported to be around 50k per week
Sheva - not sure but I dont think he really came here to learn English do you ;)

Thats just some of the big players in the EPL, moving onto the smaller clubs which I think are paying big money for big players.

    Dennis Rommedahl - Charlton
    Robbie Keane - Spurs

Infact, I could go on but its evident that a big wage to clubs down there is in the excess of 40k thats for clubs like Tottenham, Blackburn, Everton etc.

We paid Keane a mint during his stay so there's no reason why we couldn't offer Gravesen a big deal for 2 years. Despite what Lawwell says I still think the whole things dependant on Stan heading South.

Ps. Strong rumour Petrov was having a bit of a fling with some trollop in Glasgow, hence the hurry to get out of the place... anyone heard anything similar, or is it more Hun garbarge?:fear:

Come on mate, you've named players in the top four clubs, obviously they're in a different league than us, but I don't believe the average wages at clubs like Blackburn and Everton are higher than ours.

Greendave, I can completely see your point and I am an optmisit but I think with the way our game is going and more importantly, our finances, we have to be strict and versataile.

Its not a case of being a glass half empty guy, its just being a realist.

I will be chuffed if we come to an agreement on Gravesen though, but I just cant see it.

I cant commit to the wages they get but Arteta, Johnston and Cahill are likely going to be big earners.

    I'm a realist, not a day dreamer !!

It's never going to happen , the quicker we all realise that the quicker we can get to more realistic signing targets !

I'd LOVE to sign him , but ....

    * we can't afford Paul Hartley !!!

I think what some people may over look is that Celtic have access to as much money as they want, in my opinion.

But, the people in charge of the company feel it would be wrong to spend millions on transfers and offer silly wages, hence the reason why the budgers are much more strict.

FFS by christmas time celtic would have brought out 5 strips in the past 2 seasons(isnt including GK's) and they have all sold in abundance and we cant afford to pay big wages for one guy tht would take the spl by storm. This is a joke

Id say that management no doubt agrees with your opinion on big wages. Coming from Madrid, he'll have to take a pay cut if he wants to play here, and Im sure he knows that. By now they know whats on the table, the guy likes the idea of the move by the sounds of things, now he's just got to decide if he wants to come play here for the money the teams offerring.

That is the top line for big earners, but Stan would still earn more. Compare the most Celtic pay for a player £35,000-£38,000, to the most Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal etc pay £100,000-£120,000 even the lesser clubs ie Tottenham, Blackburn and Aston Villa will still pay some players upwards of £40,000-£50,000. I think most of the teams in the premiership clearly have a higher avarage wage than either of the old firm.
