Yeah, absolute diasasters against many teams in Europe. He had one season when he played about 6/10, but the rest of the team was so * he seemed decent by comparison. Never thought much of him at all, and won't be convinced otherwise with revisionist thinking.

+1 for Tommy Johnson and Stan Varga btw.

CV is better than Alan Shearer, matters not a jot.

Sorry but that is wrong. OUr defence actually tightened up a lot in the run in when Loovens was partnered with Caldwell because of Mick's injury. The defense had been poor earlier but the irony is they were at their best in ages during our run in to lose 4 in a row. It was simply that the strikers stopped scoring and the MF looked to have run our of ideas.

I was talking about the season as a whole. Not the run in.

Silly dropped points at Aberdeen etc. was our weakness, our set piece defending was awful.

I still maintain if Bobo Balde was in there we wouldn't have conceded so many goals from set pieces.

Still do you think 4 goals in a season is good enough for a Celtic striker?

Alan thompson, some great goals from play, great free kicks (v liverpool) and many goals scored from his crosses by Sutton, Laarson and Hartson, plus he had a great heart and attitude, always was my fav player of MON era

No of course not but you get players who have nightmare first seasons then take off in their 2nd. I generally look to see the potential in a player rather than what they are doing right now and I always could see what Miller could be if it all clicked. Eventually it did but unfortunately with Rangers not us. He has been an incredible striker over the last couple of years. I think the problem with him is that he is not suited to an intricate passing style and plays better when the team breaks from deep at speed like Scotland and Rangers have tended to be like over the last 4 years.

It may not be top of the heap but its the best we have done in the big boys Euro competition in decades and to do it twice in 2 years is not to be sniffed at. We will all be old(er) and grey(er) before we see two CL last 16 or better in two consecutive years. I doubt we will ever do that again.

    Agathe and Mark Wilson.

Agathe got a lot of abuse every week for not taking players on or bad crossing but he created allsorts of goals and was brilliant in defence.

Mark Wilson always plays well apart from that one game against the huns Cousin outran him and scored he's been good. Defends well, attacks well and is a solid player and good footballer. Never fit though but i'd have him for the rest of his career, same as McNamara.

Thommo for sure. Henrik said he was the best crosser of the ball he ever played with.
Henrik himself was very underrated as well outside of Celtic. Why did a big team never come to us with huge money for him? He did the business for Sweden against all comers. Remember the diving header in the world cup, skelped Italy once or twice as well.

What??? I am just being realistic. Those two last 16s under Strachan are the best we have done in the big Euro competition in decades. Even in periods where we had much better players than we have now we always failed to progress. WGS's achievement (with pretty average players) was incredible and exceptional, almost defying football logic. It will not easily be repeated when you consider that the other 10 or 11 managers since Stein have all failed to do it even once.

I agree. Varga was a good player. A better defender than his partner Bobo IMO.

    Jollygreengiant!

Are you still in Aus mate? If so its a pity I can't by you a pint.

That's the best post I've ever seen! Of course it's Danny! Of course he was world class, of course he is regarded by many as the greatest Celtic full back of all time. Of course he is recognised my some as the greatest Scottish full back ever. Of course he is regarded by many people outside th UK as a truely world class footballer. Of course he is underrated!

Let's be clear about this, if he played for any other football club in Britain, he'd be Sir Danny McGrain.

    Only in Scotland.......
