CELTIC have launched a £1.5million bid to land Serbia and Montenegro World Cup star Daniel Ljuboja.

The Parkhead club have already held discussions with Stuttgart aimed at bringing the striker to Glasgow as Gordon Strachan steps up his efforts to strengthen his squad.

Celtic boss Strachan has received glowing scouting reports on the powerful 6ft2ins hitman he views as an ideal replacement for John Hartson.

The manager is hoping to supplement his team with at least three new faces before the transfer deadline closes at the end of the month and Ljuboja tops his list along with Wolves left-back Lee Naylor.

Molineux manager Mick McCarthy yesterday confirmed Celtic's interest in the 26-year-old defender who is likely to cost the champions £400,000.

Sources in Germany last night confirmed the interest in Ljuboja and it's understood Stuttgart are more than willing to do business.

The Bundesliga outfit paid Paris St Germain 2million euros for the highly-rated 27-year-old last season and while Ljoboja made a major impact he is currently embroiled in a contractual dispute.

The Serbian, who scored eight goals in 18 appearances last term, has been told he can leave if any but I'm not sure what level it's gone to as I have not spoken to Gordon Strachan myself.Lee is a good player so I am not surprised there's been interest in him.

"I would be reluctant to sell him as knowing Lee was here was one of the reasons I came to the club.

"He only has a year left on his contract and has been offered a new deal. But I have played at Celtic and I know what a wonderful place it is.

"Before I came to this club I went through the squad and, if I'm honest, I hummed and hawed about taking the job as I thought they had sold too many players for us to be competitive - especially when there was only two weeks left to get new players in.

"But one of the real plus points was knowing we still had Lee Naylor."

Ironically, if Naylor is secured by Celtic his arrival will signify the end of the line for another former Wolves left-back Mo Camara.

Meanwhile, Strachan will decide today whether to question any SFA punishment added to his automatic, two-match ban for last Sunday's touchline confrontation at Tynecastle.

Last night he admitted he had found the row with Hearts' John McGlynn "upsetting" and is now thinking over what options he has to prevent any further damage to his reputation. He said: "At the end of the day I didn't verbally abuse the referee or the fourth official. And it's upsetting that such a minuscule incident has been blown out of all proportion.

"I played more than 480 games at the highest level in Scotland and England and was never sent off. Now a skirmish in the technical area has had every private detail made public."

Strachan is particularly mystified by the leak of information concerning what was said in private between himself and Stuart Dougal inside the dressing room area at the end of Hearts'2-1 win.

And he is also understood to be annoyed over a verbal volley from McGlynn which alleged Strachan was upset over Hearts' success because he was a Hibs supporter as a child growing up in Edinburgh.

Strachan said:"I haven't worn a Hibs scarf since I was 13. And I can't believe how childish arguments can become."

He wants to avoid any additional ban arising from allegedly inappropriate remarks to the referee.

He added: "Celtic have been so busy with the match against Hearts and the friendly against Chelsea that I haven't had time to study the official reports that have been sent to me. But I'll be doing that now because I've found the whole business to be upsetting."

we can always hope but it is daily record talk

The numbers here might be somewhat decieving ... Lead his medicore team in scoring in the Bunsaliga, got it done internationaly with 4 goals in 5 games in the UEFA Cup (Rennes, PAOK 2, Middlesbough), 17 Caps for Serbia and Montenagro.

    1.5? Ill take it :50:

i heard it was 12m split between the 2 teams that would make 6m each...now that the jam farts are set to go outski ..that would net us another 6m minimum. just for phaze 1.

However, with Hearts looking unlikely to qualify for the Champions League, the SPL champions would bank an extra £2m. Last season the share of the market pool was £4.56m, and a similar figure will be made available this season. Under Uefa rules, 55 per cent is granted to the Champions and the second side receives the rest.
Providing only one team qualifies for the group stages, then they receive the entire amount.

Ljuboja scores his 8th and causes trouble in Stuttgart
Danijel Ljuboja scored his 8th Bundesliga goal for VfB Stuttgart last weekend. He scored from the penalty spot against relegation threatened VFL Wolfsburg and equalized the result during the first half for 1:1. Young VfB midfield talent Christian Gentner scored the match winning goal in the second half with a wonderful volley from around 10 metres for 2:1. Meanwhile the 27 year old Serbian forward caused some anger in the Schwabian capital, when he announced in a post-match interview, that he is not satisfied with the financial situation at his club and demanded at least the double income he receives now, due to his good performances. Club manager Horst Heldt was pretty annoyed with “Ljubo’s” public announcement and said: “If another club wants to buy him for 2 Mio Euros, he can leave immediately.”

Danijel Ljuboja ( 6 ft 2" by the way) wants to leave VfB Stuttgart

Serbian striker banished to Regional League

    24.07.2006 by Arno van Opstal

Danijel Ljuboja wishes to leave his current club VfB Stuttgart and subsequently the club management of the German BundesLiga club have sent the Serbian forward to the second team who are playing in the German Regional League.
    24th July deadline
Last week, Ljuboja asked to be put on the transfer list because he wants to leave the club despite having a contract till the summer of 2009. Team manager of ‘Die Schwaben’, Horst Held, told 27-year old Ljuboja he had until Monday, 24th July to change his mind. Ljuboja didn’t have a change of heart, which is confirmed by Held: “We made the deadline this Monday for Danijel, but he still wants to leave VfB. Until he has found a new club, Danijel will play with the second team of Stuttgart.”
    Just one season in Stuttgart
Danijel Ljuboja played only one season for VfB Stuttgart. In September last year, the German club brought him in from French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain on loan. Later on during the season the Germans decided to buy him and the former Crvena Zvezda Beograd player signed a 3-and-a-half year deal. Ljuboja played 23 games in the German BundesLiga in which he scored a total of 8 goals.
