    Match Report on Celticfc.net

    Friendly match
    Wednesday, August 9, 2006
    Stamford Bridge, London

    CHELSEA…1
    (Wright-Phillips 45)
    CELTIC…1
    (Caldwell 10)

GARY CALDWELL was Celtic’s unlikely goal hero as an enthralling and hard-fought ‘Battle of Britain’ clash ended in stalemate.

The central defender powered home Shunsuke Nakamura’s corner to give the Hoops a deserved lead in the 10th minute before Shaun Wright-Phillips equalised seconds before the break.

Both sides had chances to seal the win in an action-packed second period but Celtic will be satisfied with an impressive performance against the star-studded Premiership champions.

Critics of Celtic’s pre-season schedule would have probably suffered palpitations at the prospect of Chelsea’s fixture list over the last four days. After losing 1-0 to an MLS All-Star side in Chicago on Sunday, the Blues beat Feyenoord 1-0 last night in Holland – just 24 hours before taking on the Hoops.

However, manager Jose Mourinho has never been one to follow convention and showed no sympathy for his weary stars by naming six of the players who started against the Dutch giants last night in his line-up.

Chelsea may be the new ‘Galacticos’ of the modern era, but, by playing three games in four days, their Portuguese leader obviously sees nothing wrong with an old-fashioned, intense pre-season programme.

Chelsea skipper John Terry enjoys hero status at Stamford Bridge and also endeared himself to the Celtic fans by revealing that he has always been a Hoops fan in his programme notes.

Terry’s soft spot for Celtic originally came as a result of sibling rivalry – his brother Paul follows Rangers – but the England star still looks out for the Bhoys’ results every week.

Prior to the match, Terry also spoke of his admiration for former team-mate and new Celtic signing Jiri Jarosik, who won a Premiership medal during a year-long spell with Chelsea.

The Czech Republic ace received a warm welcome on his return to Stamford Bridge and lined up alongside Kenny Miller in attack, as Gordon Strachan made four changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Hearts on Sunday.

Ross Wallace came in at the expense of Paul Telfer, while Evander Sno – who was outstanding throughout - , Neil Lennon and Stephen Pearson replaced Stilian Petrov, Maciej Zurawski and Aiden McGeady.

Celtic were clearly determined to make up for the disappointment of Tynecastle and created the first real opening. Pearson combined superbly with Miller but Nakamura couldn’t latch on to the former’s cutback.

Strachan’s side controlled the first ten minutes and they were rewarded with Caldwell’s opener. Jarosik won a corner on the right and Nakamura’s pinpoint delivery was rammed home by the defender for his first goal in the Hoops.

Chelsea started the match in their usual 4-3-3 formation with Shaun Wright-Phillips and Arjen Robben supporting Didier Drogba in attack.

The Ivorian striker has been something of an enigma during his Chelsea career but, possibly due to the presence of summer arrival of Andriy Shevchenko on the bench, seemed out to prove a point.

While Wright-Phillips grabbed Chelsea’s goal in the first period, Drogba was on the end of almost every chance Mourinho’s side created. However, a combination of poor finishing and good defending left the striker frustrated.

After playing second fiddle for the first quarter of the match, Chelsea crept back into the game, with Lampard and Robben exerting more influence. Drogba threatened with a wild volley and then tested Artur Boruc from 12 yards after pouncing on a Caldwell slip.

At the other end, Pearson was causing Paulo Ferreira countless problems with his direct running and Kenny Miller almost profited from his endeavours. The midfielder gathered possession on the wing and Miller was inches away from diverting his cross into the top corner.

Strachan will have been buoyed by Celtic’s first-half performance but Chelsea hit the Hoops with a sucker-punch just when it seemed they would go into the break with a 1-0 lead. Robben found Wright-Phillips on the edge of the box and the diminutive winger manoeuvred into space to rifle a drive into the bottom corner.

The strength of Mourinho’s squad was highlighted when the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ introduced Michael Essien, Andriy Shevchenko, Geremi and Michael Ballack. Strachan also made changes, with McGeady and Zurawski entering the fray for Nakamura and Miller.

The Chelsea crowd were getting the first glimpse of box-office signings Ballack and Shevchenko and the duo both came close only minutes after stepping on to the Stamford Bridge pitch.

The Ukrainian forced Boruc into a world-class stop and Ballack then drove past the post after an unselfish knockdown from Shevchenko. Lampard then arrowed an acrobatic volley past the upright.

The Blues had visibly upped their performance but Celtic still posed a threat. Pearson made a fantastic back-post run to meet Jarosik’s cross but Carlo Cudicini denied him with an instinctive block.

Ballack fizzed another drive over the bar before Pearson was handed another glorious opportunity. Zurawski’s slip allowed the midfielder a clear shot but substitute goalkeeper Henrique Hilario smothered his effort.

Derek Riordan, on for Jarosik, had a goal rightly disallowed as the Hoops chased a winner, but Strachan will be content with the confidence-boosting draw ahead of Saturday’s SPL match with St Mirren.
