I can't believe the comments on here because some numpty said there was some trouble at a convention....

Im from Glasgow... i was at the convention for a week and seen no signs of trouble or out of order (manchester) behavior. In fact, if anything, the irish and scots got on perfectly well. If you were to go to Santa Ponsa at any other time of the year with no convention, there would likely be more trouble / bad behavior.

All i can take from this thread is that people on here want to highlight problems that are irrelevant to the actual circumstance.

At the end of the day we are all Celtic supporters and shouldnt feel the need to say whether or not you are a better fan if you are from Ireland, Nothern Ireland or Scotland etc.

    Hail Hail

I know exactly what you mean. A lot of Scottish Celtic supporters have a very unreal idea of Ireland because they never lived there and tend to mainly bump into serious republican heads from the north through Celtic. The average Irish person (in the Republic) isnt very republican, dislikes Sinn Fhein and their sort of hard line northern style republicanism and they tend to associate Celtic with that. Like it or not a fair amount (but I am not saying all) of Irish Celtic fans are primarily attracted to Celtic because of the nationalistic and republican stuff, otherwise there would be no attraction supporting an SPL side. In the south really hard line republican people are fairly thin on the ground, most people ignoring Sinn Fheinn and voting for the 2 mild middle of the road parties Fianna Fail and Fianna Gael. Celtic are associated in 'the average Irish persons' mind with an unpopular in your face rather roughneck northern republicanism and it is linked in peoples minds with Celtic unfortunately because the strip is (mis)used as a sort of badge of identity in the north among republicans just as the hun strip is by loyalists. The retort against people who are like that is to call them 'west Brits' but the reality is their is a lot more people in Ireland other than Ulster who are down on hard line republicanism than their are hard line republicans. I think a lot of Scottish visitors to Ireland go to Donegal and get a totally false impression of typical attitudes in the Republic of Ireland. Donegal has very strong Northern Irish tendencies (even the accent is semi-northern).

I think there is a significant element like that even in Scotland in the away fans especially. I also think a * of a lot of Irish wear the jersey and claim they support us but are unbelievably clueless about Celtic and Scottish football, never been to a game, probably never even saw a game on TV pre-SKY. However, the element of the Irish fans who just love the club and the football legend of Celtic are the opposite-exceptionally dedicated and have to shell out a * of a lot of money.

spot on mate, any proper Celtic fan I know are hardcore and love Celtic and travel everywhere to see them unlike most of the EPL supporting Irish lads who have never been to a game. As for supporting Celtic because of republican links etc.. I for one started supporting Celtic before i ever even heard of sinn fein or the IRA.

The bottom line is that there is a massive amount of support for Celtic in Ireland. Some are Republicans and some are not. Most people who dont support Celtic wish them well. But there is a small anti Celtic brigade. The reasons have been covered by the other lads. I hope the people who slated me the last time i highlighted this misconception are now better informed of the facts.

Anyhoo whos been on a bender abroad? Anyone who has knows the craic and things can get a bit mad. Some lad had a wee drink and * in a lift, others were playing music too loud. It happens. It seems to me that the person who made the complaint was probably staying in party apartments when they should have been in family orientated ones. It is nothing to do with Celtic FC, Celtic fans, or Irish people. It seems that the person in question should have researched were he was staying a little bit better.

Sounds pretty normal for some of the clowns that hang around all football teams we are no better and no worse than any other. Some people think * in a lift is normal apparently.

alot of facts there with no proof to back it up, yes I'm sure there are scumbags who wear a celtic top but I'd reckon theres just as many wearing tops from the english premiership.
99% dont support celtic? how do you know, have you done a national survey?
