If you need a mentor you shouldnt be near the Celtic job.

IF it is Lenny and a mentor I think to again dip into the old Celtic hero bag and drag out a guy who has been out the game for near 20 years is just stupid. Lenny knows next to nothing and he would need more than some distant mentor.

why not just stick Rab Douglas, Jackie, Jos and Bobo in there too. Are you trying to reform the MON pre-Seville squad. Being an ex-player seems more important than any merit:rolleyes:

He gets my credit for instilling fight but that is not enough.

He COULD succeed. In a 2 horse race with Rangers in trouble I think there is every chance he will BUT..and this is the big but..that will be DESPITE a novice manager. Having a novice manager will make it less likely not more. Why take the risk.

One proviso-If Lenny does the one thing which I think he is in a strong position to do-blood 4 or 5 of our best young players into the first 11 and it works-then noone will be happier than me. Youth and the reserves is the one area Lenny has the advantage and nothing is better than bringing through young players. IF that is the plan then good but its probably not.

Och don't talk mince man ffs.

If Celtic succeed next season, and Neil Lennon is the manager, then just swallow your pride and admit that Neil Lennon has proved you wrong and done a good job. Quite frankly if Neil Lennon delivers the title and you come out and say we won it IN SPITE of him being the manager then you will only make yourself look like an *.

I totally understand why you are against Neil Lennon getting the job. That is a perfectly valid opinion to have and you most certainly are not alone in feeling that way. You really need to drop this other pish about 'if we win it'll be in spite of him' though.

I am not saying I would say that or even think it at the time. It would be far too late by then anyway 'spilled milk'. I am just saying in a weak league we might just about get away with a weaker appointment. It still does not justify a weak appointment though as that would increase the risk of failure and even if we won we would potentially have walked it much more convincingly with a strong one. I would rather have someone who will transform the struggling team and demolish Rangers in style like MON and WGS did in their first 2 seasons than trundle along neck in neck maybe playing like we did in the run in.

I think it would take someone special and a fair bit of cash to 'demolish' Rangers. Whether Celtic fans want to face up to it or not - Rangers are NOT a bad team. They only lost 3 league games last season. If Rangers only lose 3 games again next season then it becomes almost impossible to 'demolish' them.

Tony Mowbray is a good manager but he clearly didn't cut it at Celtic so that says to me that the league isn't so weak that any tom, * or harry can walk into Celtic Park and automatically succeed or even be in contention. If Neil Lennon gets the manager's job and delivers the title next season then he will deserve a huge amount of praise and a pat on the back for doing it. It would be quite an achievement for a man who was in his first full season as a football manager.

if lennon wins the league he will take the credit, if he doesnt the board will take criticism for appointing an inexperienced manager, either way by the end of next season theyll be people on here eating their words which is why im not throwing all my eggs into 1 basket.
Personally hughes wouldve been my 1st choice but if lennons appointed he'll have my FULL support.

My only worry would be lennons tactical knowledge on how to approach certain games or situations, theres more to it than just picking a formation, other than that i have no real problems with lennon being manager.

totally agree.would prefer a good proven manager but just because i don't think lenny is the man doesn't mean i will not back him 100% if he gets it.and i will not blame him if it goes wrong.what celtic fan would knock back the chance to manage a club they love so much?anyone who would turn there back on the team(which i know wouldn't happen anyway)but if they do they are unwanted fans anyway

That is true but think the last sentence highlights the problem. It would be a rare achievement. Do we want to appoint someone who has to pull off a rare achievement to bring us the title? Ideally we want someone of a standard who you immediately fancy will give us the upper hand.

One other major thing against Lenny is once the loans go back (and I suspect all or nearly all will), this will leave us with a very very thin group of proven first-11 quality players, even if we do not sell. We cannot assume that the untested group who have barely got 5 hours on the pitch between them (Ki, Jos, Rass, Rogne etc) are the answer. They could do well but they are essentially unknowns. Take away the loans, those whose contracts are up, unknown quantities and people who its clear are not good enough what do we have left? 2 goalies, one RB, No LB, no CBs, one CM, no proper strikers, a couple of weird forwards who miss sitters, and a good few wingers. That potentially presents a * of a rebuilding job. It will take someone with a real gift at spotting players on the cheap and bring through the odd youth to fill that gap. New players will be the most important aspect of the new manager. Lenny has no track record. The happy knack of spotting cheap good players is a talent Levein has and is one of the reasons why if we cannot get Mark Hughes I would be happy with Levein.

I think the first paragraph is entirely fair comment.

However, I think if Craig Levein got the job and won the league I would be equally surprised. Levein has no track record of winning anything and he would not in any way make me feel that we had the 'upper hand' going into next season. I know you don't agree with me on that so we'll just have to agree to differ there.

Mark Hughes on the other hand.............. :50:
