Firstly, there are questions over who was actually picking that team.

Secondly, he got them up to sixth. Bare in mind that this is no mean feat in the EPL, and that the likes of Sven Goran Eriksson and Roberto Mancini did, and will may well do, not much better.

As for his win %, remember that Gordon Strachan had 33% and 35% at Coventry and Southampton respectivley. Even O'Neill 46% at Wycombe, 45% at Norwich and 38% at Leicester. At Villa he's only won 42%. It's statistically probable that the more games you play, the lower your win percentage will be. Basically, it doesn't count for *.

Hughes' record is unquestionable, and better than anything other realistic contenders can boast.

As they where when he got Blackburn to three consecutive FA Cup semi finals, the Round of 32 in the UEFA Cup, and finished sixth and seventh. Blackburn had a similar budget to what we can offer now, and had considerably harder opposition than us.

He also coached Wales to the playoffs, remember. Wales.

Not to mention that at Celtic, a manager is always going to have a much better chance of improving that win percentage, purely based on the majority of the opposition we have here.

Hughes does have an appeal, no doubt, however as I pointed earlier in this thread, it was his representative that revealed that there had been 'contact', regardless how informal. It may be in Hughes' interest to try and force someone else's hand elsewhere, by revealing this 'Celtic' link.

Furthermore, if he takes the Celtic job, we need to know he is commited to our cause, and not just keeping a hand in, until a plump EPL job comes along.

Celtic need to * get there finger out. Give him a budget of £10+ million and this guy will have us absolutly storming the league.

He entered the transfer market, bringing in players such as Benni McCarthy (£2 million), David Bentley (£500,000) solt him for £15 million , Ryan Nelsen (free), Stephen Warnock (£1.5 million) sold him £ 6 million od , Roque Santa Cruz (£3.5 million) sold him for £17 million , and Christopher Samba (£400,000).

Proven low budget record which is exactly what we need and he built a Blackburn side that were very hard to beat.
He knows a bargain when he see's it.

Do you think for a second that Lenny's sitting on his hands and not out there getting to know scouting systems and the transfer market. Since he was appointed on Thursday, all I've read about is Lenny on the phone to MON, WGS, Lambert etc, and believe me it'll not have been for small talk either. This guy's so keen to make it work that he's leaning on his ex gaffers and mentors who are only too willing to help him succeed at Celtic. He'll be asking their advice to the point of harrassment in order to get what he wants from the game. I'm a firm believer that if Neil Lennon thought for a minute his methodology would have a negative impact on the club he loves then he'd be the first to suggest he steps aside for a more experienced figure in the dugout.

Great post, I too am hoping that Lennon gets the job. Do we really want Mark Hughes to come, then leave at the first Top 10 EPL job that comes up? Neil Lennon isnt just a Celtic man he knows and wants what is best for Celtic and he has the confidence to be a great manager.

This would be huge if it was actually true. That article smacked of pure speculation though and adding 2+2 and getting 5.
Mark Hughes is a genuine quality manager who would be just the kind of appointment to create a buzz about Celtic again and I firmly believe would lead us back to the top and build a side we could all love like O'Neill's Celtic.
I think as well if Neil Lennon was made his assistant manager it may well be the perfect situation. Mark Hughes comes in and builds Celtic back up into a top side with Lennon learning the ropes as asistant and then able to step into the top job say 4-5 years down the road. Or who knows maybe they become such an effective team they end up staying long term.

Bottom line I would love to see Mark Hughes as Celtic manager. I think he would be outstanding for us.

Im surprised at how pro Lennon everyone is to get the job on full time basis. I dont doubt his commitment to celtic but it wasnt so long ago that everyone was complaining about Mowbrays lack of experience and track record. Lennon doesnt have a first team track record to speak of and yet most want him to take charge. I think its more to do with the type of person he is than his qualifications for the top job that is getting him votes. I think the board will want him too, they forked out a small fortune on Mowbray, Lennon will be much, much cheaper to keep in place rather than find someone else on open market.

Heard any rumours about O'Neill handing his resignation at Villa? Could be BS but I would love to see St Martin back in the Parkhead hotseat...

I would rather Lennon over Hughes

this guy is a proven manager i honestly cant belive people would rather have lennon over him, when mowbray was first appointed his experince was questioned by many of the celtic fans but all of a sudden lennons the way to go a guy who has NO first team managerial experince

The Board must Strike While Iron is Hot... !!!

It looks as though Hughes has confirmed his interest in the job at least through his Assistant Boss...

TEAMtalk | Football | Latest Football news, Results and Fixtures

If this is serious interest in the job, Celtic cant afford to wait around. Other jobs and offers will arise, we are presently manager-less, he is out of a job.

My only concern is that Lawell and the board are praying that the Celtic support warm towards Lenny taking charge full time. Something myself i am not totally against, but would much prefer Hughes, proven boss, knows the British game, can match Rangers physically and will command respect from the media in Scotland.

I think that this will be a decision that could have serious implications for the board. If things are done correctly, we should have him in place asap, pinpointing new signings, and building his side for next season early....

Not sure about success at the High End of the Premiership? He done well with Blackburn albeit in a thuggish, route 1 system (arguably what this team needs but it will not endear itself to the masses).

At Man City despite the millions he never really capitalised and there were some real disappointing results.

I'm not convinced by his record and still think he's a bit young for an immense job like Celtic..
