i know alot of loyalists, infact my best mate is the band sergeant of the prince of orange flute band from coatbridge, my dad and all his side of the family are part of orange bands and orange lodges through out coatbridge, airdrie and bailleston......i am christian, and obv a celtic fan. I am a son, grandson, nephew, cousin and best friend to loyalists so my answer is YES they are very very confused. My dad married a catholic ( you hear of this all the time) If he got what he "wants" and marches for, then he would not have met my mum, and not have had his 3 children. The majority of orange loyalists are very stupid people, who have been brainwashed from a very young age and think that its ok.

what the orange order dont seem to get through their thick heads ... is that they have no right to march through nationalist areas. Is simple! It comes across as pure provocation and its obvious theres gona be resistance. Yet when theres resistance ... like always.. nationalists are given a bad name through the media.

some fool left a comment on that vid saying ''protestant ulster will always be british'' .... comments like that fries my * , cus what the uneducated numpty doesnt realise is that ULSTER is a province of ireland, consisting of 2 counties they left out surprise suprise ( because of the catholic majority).... which might jeopardise their gerrymandered protestant state.

Now, please excuse me if I seem naive before I start this, as I grew up in Australia. Although I have a decent grasp, thanks to my family, one thing I don't get is what is the point of their march other than being inflammatory?

Here's the Bill & Ted's version of World History since the 17th century... Lets just recount a couple of things that have happened... 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie & the Jacobites marched down into England and marched all the way back, America & France had revolutions in addition to the Industrial Revolution, Australia was 'discovered', Napoleon conquered most of Europe, Lincoln abolished slavery, Karl Marx invented the concept of Communism, Karl Benz invented the car, 2 World Wars, yet more Revolutions in Russia, China & Cuba, the invention of the telephone, the television, the A bomb & the internet, man has walked on the moon, and, oh yeah, the British established and then lost an Empire...

So, you can see that the world is a vastly different place. A society can only progress if it is inclusive of all. Ideologically, they actually share a remarkable number of values in common with the KKK. I'm sure that they would disagree with that assessment, but be that as it may...

That knowing full well it will antagonize & cause tension in the community, that like it or not, we all have to walk the same streets & obey the same laws. We live in a society where contributions from all communities are not only welcomed, but embraced, and that carrying on as they do is an exercise in futility.

I just don't get it. What is the point? Why do it?

I am no expert, however even a cursury glance at the 2 does reveal a number of similiar principles. The belief of superiority based on race, opposition to (amongst other things) Catholicism, organisations based on WASP profiling. In times past they have both used violence and intimidation in order to protect what they see as their right, to subjugate others.

Don't get me wrong. Not for one minute am I saying that they are the same, because they clearly are not, and I believe they have seperate agendas, and the Klan have clearly been identified as a terrorist organisation.

As an outside observer I may have misinterpereted actions & words, and I could well be wrong.

To be fair, if you asked the majority of Celtic fans, "why do you support Celtic?" your answer, in most cases, would be "...because my dad supports them"

I wasn't meaning you specifically, mate, but alot of fans will tell you that it's in their blood as their dad/uncle/brother etc supports them.

I fell in love with Celtic through my stepdad.

true, but i dont support celtic because they are the "catholic" club; indeed celtic is and never has been an exclusively catholic club. you ask a rangers fan you're more likely to get a different answer!

as for the orange order, i actually had a letter printed in the herald last year about them, needless to say if got a few perma raging replies, though the paper did edit out some of the more potentially libelous claims; see if you can spot them lol!

"I could not have agreed more with Muriel Gray's article "Vile Orange marches prove Scots still have way to go on compassion" (Sunday Herald 23 August). I, along with many other unfortunte people have had the 'pleasure' of unwittingly walking into an oncoming Orange march and even though it has been an annual irritation since I was born their renewed prescence every July never fails to anger me. Such an occasion happened barely a two weeks ago as Dumbarton Road came to a standstill as the bigoted hordes laid claim to the land. To see the pond life that take part in and follow these marches is enough to make the stomach of any fair minded person turn; it is bad enough seeing the "slopping out queue at Barlinnie" types as Muriel Gray calls them going through their hymn sheet of hate but to see mothers pushing kids in prams decked out in Union flags and red hands of Ulster makes you realize that a whole new generation of bigots are being brought up to hate.

It is this which is the real tragedy; that despite all the well meaning (though usually half hearted) iniatives from various Scottish administrtions to tackle this cancer the message never seems to get through; perhaps the Orange Order reject modern forms of communication in favour of a more 1690-esque form!! For too long this hate filled organization has been given favourble treatment and coverage from those who hould know better; as Muriel Gray points out many of our senior politicians and police support the Orange Order. I would have though being a member of the Orange Order is akin to being in the Ku Klux Klan or a Neo-* party and would result in pariah status. But that does not seem to be the case in Scotland sadly. For as long as we have apologists for this most vile of groups in our corridors of power what hope does Scotland has? I can only hope that Glasgow City Council follows through it's reported intention to drastically reduce (if not outright ban) the number of marches and spare all us sane, fair and open minded Scots the embarrasment and shame of having to explain to visitors from abroad what these marches stand for. I'm not holding my breath though."

The confusing thing is when they sing the famine song only to follow that song with guarding Derry's walls. What the * do they want?
