I knew a guy that use to have all the che stuff, he even has a che tattoo and I can remember asking him why do you like him so much, he replied hes cool as *, I said how, all he could answer was with the quote ''In My veins flows the blood of Irish Rebels''

Che is a counterculture figure - ie the opposite of what is seen as a disfunctional, capitalist and Americanized world. Such figures have always cropped up.

some celtic supporters support che guevara because they've never studied him and saw a nifty t-shirt with his face on at a concert once

Maybe so, but i'd say a lot of us have studied him. Admire him for treating the impoverished and ill in Latin America. Admire him for liberating Cuba from the American backed Batista who had let the ordinary people suffer while the Cosa Nostra poisoned the island with drugs. Che helped turn Cuba from a corrupt, Mafioso infested backwater into the country with the highest literacy rate on the planet.

Che fought oppressive regimes in Africa and died in Bolivia fighting against American Imperialism.

But most of all, he never sold out. He was head of the Cuban National Bank but declined the salary and lived off of his army salary. A true man of the people.

P.S O'Neill, you're neeber got the quote wrong. It was his dad, Ernesto Snr., who said
"The first thing to note is that in my son's veins flowed the blood of the Irish rebels"

Interesting how every american condems him on here. Wonder if they were taught about him at school or they came to that conclusion by themselves.

He was captured by Bolivians backed by the Yanks. The CIA paraded his body as a trophy to the press. I'd be gobsmacked if there were any Americans on here who backed Guevara. Americans, on the most part, just seem to have a pre-disposition towards the right wing. Maybe it's the whole Puritan roots thing idk but any country where Obama could be accusesd of Socialism and where an NHS could be seen as evil is clearly not going to be warm towards the left.

To be fair to Obama he is quite left wing, especially for an american president. It's just a shame the guys above him are knobs

He's left wing for an American but by pre-New Labour UK standards he'd be a Tory.

alsybhoy, i agree with that to an extent but would you be OK with BNP, NF types at CP?

    * me! I've read some ignorant * in my time!

I wish people would at least read a wee bit of the subject matter (at the very least something from wikipedia) before posting some of the nonsense there is in this thread.

You're right. He's nothing like Sands. He was a success. Sure the Hunger Strike won over people to the Republican cause but, sadly, more than 20 years on, Northern Ireland is probably further from independence/union with the South than it was then. Sands death achieved a sentimental victory, Che's life achieved independence and social change.

Just to make sure my comments aren't taken in the wrong way, I am in no way belittling Bobby Sands or his achievements. He is an inspiration to me and an influence on my own political thinking so I wouldn't want the above to be seen as an attack on him.
