When do you think it is likely to happen?

    I'm asking out of curiousity.

I would say within 20 years.

The british government would be keen to get NI off their hands and make it someone else's problem. To do that they would really need some sort of referendum mandate.

As the numbers of Catholic Unionists or Protestant Nationalists are 1% or less, they basically need to wait till the number of Catholics in the province is greater than the number of Protestants. I would say, given the population trends, that would probably be in something like 15-20 years.

Sooner than later I reckon as McGuinness, Adams and Paisley seem to be nudging closer to it I think. It makes sense because Ireland was once united before, and it is counter productive in many ways to keep it split.

I could draw you the parallel with divided Germany before they ripped the Berlin Wall down.

Never. The GFA and stormont are so entrenched now and the British government has invested a lot of time and money for the 6 county state to fall apart.

The real question is will it matter, as we will all soon be part of a European super state, the idea of sovereignty won't matter by that stage so whether it's one Ireland, or two parts acting as two countries, the outcome will be the same.

Scotlands independance will kill 'Brittania' stone dead.
I said 10-20 years, but theres always that hint of unlikelyness on this matter.

I said 10-20 years as that is what I would like to see and hopefully it can happen. I also think that Scottish Independence would be a massive step forward in Irish independance as it would split the 'united kingdom'

    40 years maybe, hopefully less.

Sad to say I think my generation and above needs to kick the bucket as we hold the most hatedred, the younger generation is more tolerable.

    Sad but true I think.

I don't even think that calls will be required.

For all their spin in public I reckon most within the british gov would love to get out of NI. I think it costs them more money than it generates, and it's a kind of no-win situation in terms of political gold stars - and that's the two things politicos really care about...

I think originally the theory came up because Catholic couples were supposedly more likely to produce offspring than Protestant couples because Catholics were less likely to use contraception, but I think it's been proven that there isn't really any difference between both denominations in birthrates now. I think the big Catholic families are no longer as common as they once were.

    i said 30 years time

I think its inevitable, theres no stopping it

Catholics are almost in the majority here and then comes the referendum

As one of the lads said there, i think the new generation on both sides will prove more tolerable to what went on in the past

I think it will be at least 50 years before we see it. What I would like to know is....how passionately do people really feel about this subject? Do you just sing the rebel songs to join in with the crowd or do you REALLY believe in in it and feel passionate about it???

I really believe in it. The existance of the statelet in Ireland is a throwback to bloodstained colonialism, founded on sectarianism and maintaining the ruling class. I support anyone who's true wish is to see it overthrown.

    Smash Stormont. :50:

Aye I feel passionately about it, Its a subject close to me and my family. As bob said the Brits have caused enough trouble over the years and its time they moved on and left Ireland to the Irish the way it should be

I think most of us will be dead when and if it happens. The loyalists would start a civil war if the Brits ever gave Ireland back to the Irish.

It's interesting that a few people think it will happen as soon as 10 - 20 years from now. For the people who voted for that.....what do you see changing in the next 20 years to make the UK government hand the 6 counties back to the Irish again?
