Yep that's true. It just shows that the public in general have lost faith that ANY political party can/will improve things. I'm really disappointed that the SNP haven't managed to oust Labour and also that the BNP have picked up more votes than Tommy Sheridan. :38:

I wonder if one of the reasons for the BNP's vote rising is that the Orange Order have been out and visible during the campaign. Even though it was Labour they were backing, just the sight of them could stir up certain feelings within some people I'm sure.

I know! I think there are so many people in Glasgow and the west coast who are institutionalised Labour voters. I wonder if they just do it as a reflex or if they actually think it through before putting their cross in the box.

It sadly doesn't say much for the people of the constituency when they continue to vote for people who've treated them like * for 74 years, even when they have possibly the most uncharismatic candidate in a election ever running for them. They could stand a blow-up doll with a red rosette on it in some areas and still win comfortably. Some people will never learn.

I agree. This is the SNP's biggest hurdle it has to overcome. If they can snap this one-track way of thinking in the West Coast then they can clean up at the next Scottish Parliament elections and push on towards Independence. If they cannot break Labour's stranglehold in the West then I don't they will ultimately succeed.

I don't know what happened with my typing there, was supposed to say blow up doll, lol.

True, I hope they can. I truly thought Glasgow East would be the start, but then Liebour managed to win in Glenrothes and now here in Glasgow NE. It's frustrating to say the least.

People vote Labour en masse because they're convinced that a protest vote would result in the Tories garnering a larger number of votes relative to the other parties. Labour's stranglehold is because of the public's Tory-phobia - they're afraid of a Tory victory.

Labour and the Tories are both pretty similar thesedays so it wouldn't make much difference. If people turned to the SNP, the Tories still wouldn't have a hope in * anyway, so their phobia is unfounded.

whats wrong with worrying about the torries winning? As a politics student myself i'm so baffled people criticise this current Labour party when Cameron has yet to put pen to paper on ANY future policy commitments of the Conservatives. So basically when they walk into downing street they can do whatever the * they like yet claim they lied to nobdody, which echos the typical tories of the past but people still claim they've changed. Laughable really

That doesn't really make sense, as the Westminster elections are first past the post, not proportional. Doesn't matter how many votes the Tories get in a seat they can't win.

I think people vote Labour en masse because they vote mechanically - "ma faither and his faither before him". They don't even realise that the modern "Labour" party stands for capitalist market values that would have their grandfathers turning in their graves. Nor do they realise that the Lib Dems, for example, are currently a lot more "left wing" in their policies than the Labour party. That goes for the SNP too.

I think a lot of it is due to flat-out ignorance, sad to say.
