I have been saying to mates of mine for years, that we will suffer one day as a result of all the foriegn players we have in our team.

Don't get me wrong we have had some crackers i.e. Larsson, Lubo, Sutton, Di Canio etc. and we have had some brilliant european nights.

Here goes! I believe it is time Celtic & the SFA bit the bullet and enforced a maximum of 3 foriegn players on the pitch at one time.
You can't tell me we haven't got the next Dalglish, Auld, Jinky,Aitken, Burns, Mcstay etc. running around schoolyards, streets, wherever that aren't as good or better than some of the pish that we all excited about becuase we sign a foriegner.

There will be short term pain but long term gain, lets be honest our european efforts and domestic performances are frustrating at best to watch, this is not a knee * reaction to this year the writing on wall has been there for a while.

Not only has our domestic league become poor, but we are not that appealing to the money men either i.e sponsors & TV rights. Our national team is also a shambles. I used to love watching Scotland in the World Cup - fair enough we didn't do much but altleast we were there.

Lets get back to basics and bring in good local kids through our youth system and recruit a couple of quality foriegners. it would have to be better than the big picture I see in front of me.

I know some of you will say *, that's alright I am not easily offended:icon_mrgreen:

You just have to look at the strength of the Scotland squad to see how good our Scottish talent is at the moment, so I think it is important to go outwith to build our team to compete at home as well in Europe.

There is a small matter of the EU employment laws, which your suggestion would contravine. UEFA have looked at something similiar a few years back, but it didn't get very far because of these regulations.

I do agree with you but tell that to the local Councils who rip up all the grass parks in every area to make way for Housing or a Superstore or the latest one is to build a new school ,its hard for kids to play kickabout now and a good few wont get the chance to get looked at and when a park is ripped up the kids lose interest .

Years ago thats how there was so many good players coming through from housing schemes etc now its harder to get noticed because of the lack of teams going about ,its sad really but whats to be done about it ,the Celtic set-up is good but personally speaking for every 20 youngsters they have on trial i bet there's about another 20 on the street who could play better but there not getting the chance to be noticed .

Ever thought to ask yourself, or indeed research why the three foreigner rule was scrapped in the first place?

We haven't i'm 20 just now. I noticed when i was thirteen or so people wern't playing football in the street as much as me n my pals were when we were a bit younger.

If I noticed it the; how much worse do you think it will be.

I had two football pitches in the park behind my house; there is two posts left not even a crossbar.

Tells ye a lot in my opinion

No way, unless we want to become the next motherwell or falkirk. I've already noticed enough home players in our team, i'd be all for it if there was any decent players but unfortunetly theres very few. Imo players like barry robson, mark wilson, mcmanus and even scott brown too a lesser extent are ruining us at the moment, (imo).

celtic fans in general demand success each and every year. it would be great to go back to the days of a first 11 like the '67 team, but with the talent level most locals have this wont happen. Can you imagine trying to sell the idea of a rebuilding phase using local players to the fans who want us to be excelling in the champs league?

Nah, didn't do a great deal of research, just opened the discussion up for thoughts.

It is sad judging by the response that kids these days can't enjoy what I did growing up, that is the luxury or honour of playing for your street team. there were some cracking players and games in the gold old days.

I know what you are all saying this will never happen - 3 foriegners rule, and with the pressure on Celtic to win every week, there isn't much hope of us going all out with the youngsters.

I am justing praying that something changes, as the football were are playing lately is bordering on torture at times!

I appreciate your point - but as Rab points out, the circumstances are a lot different in Scotland now from when a lot of the guys you mention were coming through.

I took a walk with my dad the other week, round the place where he grew up - out Carntyne way, quite a busy spot, a lot of traffic coming down from the A8. He was telling me they used to play in the street there, and they had to pick up the ball every 15 mins or so when a car came by. Made me laugh, but when I thought about it later, a lot of the legendary Scottish players grew up in that kind of circumstance. Unless you live somewhere really out of the way, that just isn't a reality for us today.

We need better sports provision in this country - but government at all levels seems far more interested in developments that enhance finance rather than lives.

I tend to agree with your sentiments, the huge number of mediocre foreign players playing in scotland in the last 15 years has had a huge affect on homegrown talent, but for me there must be something fundamental wrong wi the coaches here.Of all the young players who have made it in the SPL How many are two footed, completely comfortable on the ball, can find a team mate with a long pass on a regular basis, could score a free kick like lubo or naka.Take a look at the top 5 player thread the players of the last 15 years or so are nearly all foreign.

for what its worth , i think your mad mate. why would you want the sfa to put yet more restrictions on already struggling teams . if the scottish kids are good enough then they will be signed in front of foreign players but the sad truth is that our kids have too much to do between play stations andmillions of channels on tv. they are becoming lazy. the weather doesn't help either . the government need to make changes to improve scottish football , not place restrictions on any of the teams. i say stop all this free methodone and put the money the junkies get into leisure facilitys for the kids and re introduce school teams. this sport must be picked up from a really early age.

I dont think its so much foreigners coming to play here its the fact that here coaches would prefer you to be well built with very basic skills rather than maybe average in build but with good technique, look at barca (dont say more money etc) they dont need to buy players if they dont want to, they scout youngsters and work on their technical ability from a young age and you end up with players with Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and more recently Sergio Busquets and Pedro. Until Scottish football in General forgets the physical training overkill and starts bringing in good technical coaches from around the world Celtic are going to keep being beaten by teams like Hamburg who, no offence to them, dont have much of a team but still looked a different level to us.

    hey m8,
last night the talkceltic football team wanted to play 7 a side in the park, the park was double boked so we couldent get on the park "fair enough" but right next to the park we were suppose to play on there was a full grass park ,no one was on it ,no one was coming on to it, it was empty and the parky guy would not let us kick the ball about on it, so we had to pack up and come home.

imagine the 20 of us that turned up were youths and we were told no football ,keep off the grass ,,the 20 of us would probley roam the streets like a gang and scare * ,or we could even get in to bother of some sort

all we wanted to do was play a game of 7/8/8/10 a side

and you wonder why there is no good scottish players coming through

sadly if this rule was enforced i think things would get far worse before they got better. scottish society has changed. back in the day of mcstay and other legends, all they had was football. lads back then were honest. these days kids are more interested in facebook or drinking in the park or driving round the streets in pimped up corsas (lol). we need the foreign lads to keep us competing at european level. without them we'd have never got to seville or had any of those great european nights.
