There is a figure that has been quoted by the press, whether or not that is what he's looking for is another thing.

He did say that he was looking to be on par with the other first team regulars but nowhere near the top earners. I think he is being very reasonable to be honest given the fact that he is the current Scottish Football Writers Player of the Year and was shortlisted for the Players award, he could easily be demanding megabucks (Which he would probably get it in the English Premiership). His form has been a bit shaky in a couple of games this season but he has been rock solid for us consistently for over a year and a half. He wasnt's to play for Celtic, he wants to stay in Scotland and he's earned a new contract and a raise in salary in my opinion.

I would hardly say Caldwell was incompetent, yes he's made mistakes, some of which were costly, but he was also our best defender last season and if he's just looking to be on a par with other first team regulars I don't have a problem with that.

Of course if we could get a better player within our budgets I would jump at the chance, but I wouldn't want to take the risk of Caldwell leaving and not getting a better player in (knowing we would desperately need a CB would automatically make the selling clubs put the price up)

A million pounds a year, in wages, for Gary Caldwell, what a joke! If he thinks he can get that level of money, with his limited ability, let him go and get it.

I'd agree with this. Why do people take the media at face value? This is one of those stories which can be kept in the vault for a slow news day / right timing. Heid could've said this before the Dundee United game, or even before that. There's never a good time to say it, and I strongly suspect the papers to blame here...

I'm sure it was some time in August I first read that Caldwell was looking for around 19k a week so this could well be the same story from then just re-worded.

Of course Caldwell didn't just come out with this now, well I'd like to think he has more sense than to do that at a time like this. We all know the media bring out * about our players before every big game, they do it for a reason and thats why were paranoid

Doesn't mean we can't discuss Caldwells supposed wage demands and I don't think he's worth £19,000 a week. I don't think any player at Celtic is worth what they earn in wages either tbh but thats just my opinion. It * me off to see big heed the baws like Caldwell shouting about millions of pounds in wages when they are nothing more that average Scottish players. Davie Weir FFS is a choice above him in the Scotland team :97:

If big-mouth is worth £19k a week i reckon i must be worth about £10k.

If caldwell is worth 19k a week then players like Vidic must be worth a mill a week at least.

When i saw the name of the thread i thought we would be disscussing how to burn his contract without him noticing. Best idea....bring him out to the woods, blindfold him and spin him round a couple of times and hope that he doesnt drag his oversized head bk into parkhead again!

Rather have adam virgo cb at the minute!

Celtic are handling his contract situation very badly. If they trying to hard ball him then its going to backfire and they'll loose the player on a free transfer.

IMO Caldwell performed well last season because his contract was due for renewal and its an big incentive for players to play well in the run up to contract talks.

Its gotten to a point where we either give Caldwell what he wants or loose him on a free transfer and its Celtic's fault, contract talks should have been done before he went on holidays last season and either he got a contract whilst Celtic were in a strong position or we sell him for a nice fee, anything but whats about to happen. :31:

Ermm... if he leaves, our CB partnership is Loovens and McManus.

The "cover" we have is... wait for it... Josh Thompson, a guy whose total career 1st team experience is about seven games in League One in England.

If that's adequate cover, then a courgette is the national anthem of Bulgaria. :87:

I agree he needs to go. I mean we are playing in europe he is not outstanding in order to step up and challenge these big clubs we need a firm back four and we have not got that.

Caldwell is a bit like a domino if he messes up then it reflects on to the rest of the defenders as he starts pointing the finger and things start to leak in the defencive area. We need someone who can take control of the back four and also keep a calm and not panic everytime they are under pressure. I honestly think we need to look for a replacemant as Odea and mcmanus are not suited for the role either we need fresh bodies in celtic park revamp the team.

It is a joke that every season we settle for second best we need to wake up and smell the coffee.

A new strengthened celtic squad in all areas keeping most players but fortune is an example he is terrible he needs to go and he is only in.

Strachan has left us in the * it is up to mowbary to sort it out.

The BBC are claiming the comments were made in Tel-Aviv.

In the past, i've stuck up for Caldwell when all around me people were giving him dogs abuse. However, if indeed he has brought this to the media's attention just before the big game, I can't defend him. Such actions strike me as petulant and self-centred, which is surprising considering the recent form of the player involved, and the patience exercised by the manager by keeping him in the team.

If it were down to me, I would drop him from the team for tonight's game, the players should be looking forward and preparing for the game as a unit. For our stand-in captain to distract preparations by questioning the club and making thinly veiled threats is as unwanted as it is selfish.

    Well, no.

If no agreement is reached, he will leave next summer, or, should the club decide to sell him, and can find a buyer, the that would be brought forward to January. At which time Darren O'Dea will have returned from his half season loan at Reading.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a new deal but he could have left it till after the game to talk to the press about it.

There should only be one thing on his mind and that's getting a win tonight.
