Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has been suspended from football for nine months by the Football Association following a failed drugs test.
The Irish international failed a drugs test following last season's play-off semi-final clash with Preston North End.

The 31-year-old tested positive for the prohibited substance Ephedrine and he was charged under FA Rule E25 in relation to Regulation 2 of The FA Doping Control Programme Regulations.

    Bit harsh in it ?

Mutu got 7 months ban for cocaine, yet Paddy Kenny gets 9 months for taking somthing for a chest infection - he bought it from his local chemist accross the counter.

Poor guy must be devastaded, contract is due at end of season as well, but glad to see Sheff Utd stand up for him.

All this drugs nonsense is getting out of hand. Using an inhalant for a chest infection gives no performance-related advantage.

Football associations need to * out of people's lives. In reality, they have no right to monitor what folk put in their bodies, unless the substances concerned have clear and substantial performance advantages in the sport in question - i.e. football.

This whole farce is down to them caving in to these * anti-doping bodies, because jerks from cycling and weightlifting are complaining that football doesn't have as tough regulations as they do.

Well there's a reason for that chaps. Football is a majestic sport which draws on the elevated human faculties of skill, perception, intuition, imagination and complex tactical interaction with other human beings. Unlike cycling and track athletics, it's not just a question of pumping yir legs up and doon dead fast.

Drugs cannot turn someone into a top-class footballer, any more than skill, imagination and intelligence can turn you into a top-class bleedin weightlifter.

Imo, football should tell the yelping apologists of these bizarre pastimes to * off, and take their irrelevant drug testing with them.

I can see 1-2 months to advise players to be more cautious, as those are the rules but NINE?! Harsh indeed, and (I realize this next point many here may take issue with but I will go ahead with it nonetheless) if the FA were at all serious about getting the World Cup, you would think they would want a Sheffield United squad having their best players in the lineup, thus having a chance every week to get out of the Championship and play in the Premier League, and thus having Sheffield as a city that could be viable to host matches in 2018. Maybe I am off the deep end, but that is just me.

Before the inevitable appeals? Maybe. After? Probably 9 league cup game ban.

Ephedrine - the actual substance - is often used by bodybuilders looking to train harder, or people trying to lose weight - so it can easily be classed as performance enhancing and therefore cheating. Cocaine, on the other hand, doesn't offer any competitive advantage - so its right that a ban for this should not be as long.

That's a * joke! How much can such a drug actually enhance the performance of a * goalkeeper - it's not exactly the most athletic position!! Obviously the * are just trying to make an example of him.

    For a goalie?

Anyway, the point is, they said they accepted that it was not used as a performance enhancement.

They are just caving in to the anti-doping lobby, when they should be telling them to GTF. And this guy's career has been severely knocked off track in the process. :38:

The banned substance in question could be used as a performance enhancer.

Why didnt Paddy just go to the club doctor about it. When you have access to a medical team why not use it?

Paddy isnt a cheat but he's a * idiot for not consulting doctors when taking drugs for ailments. I think the ban is 9 months because it would be the most common way footballers would infringe doping rules and you'd definately start getting cheats if the punishment was only 2 months.

Its the same reason Frankie Sheahen got 2 years for abusing his inhaler. Very hard to distinguish between genuine stupidity and someone cheating. Punishments for these type of offenses (i.e. stupidity) have to be harsh. Football would become farcical if the punishment was short as you'd have alot more players failing tests

We used to get tested in high school before regional playoffs for any sport. I mean ffs, if I was smart enough as a 15 year old to make sure nothing I took had any speed or steroids in it you'd think someone who was doing this for a living would be smart enough to do the same. I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for him.
