It's not so much the money that unsettles as the uncertainty. You get that with all players, not just the mercenary ones - in fact the ones who are least comfortable with the financial side of things are probably the most troubled by it.

Personally I don't think his general form has been that bad - just his concentration. That, to me, is down to the contract. Get the deal done, I say.

He is the best centre back in the SPL by far closely followed by Loovens ,you said ,he can just cut it in the SPL,he has a dodgy few games and now he is crap etc ,i think you should be looking at others players who get away with murder in there .

Not sure why everyones turned on him, I know he's had a few bad matches but still our best defender by a country mile imo. I'd love to see O'Dea do well but im not so sure, i really think a 6 month loan to a good championship side would him wonders.

We can't afford that. We have a league to win.

    Darren in now.

Oh so to not be a "rookie" you have to have back to back starts? What a convenient definition.
Interesting criteria there. Nevermind his 20+ appearances or that he put in over 1000 minutes last year. He's certainly never played in Champions League football either.
Darren O'Dea is completely inexperienced and not fit to get anywhere near the pitch!

    Bollocks.

We've already seen 6 games of him playing below the standard we expect of him. To the bench, let him cool off and get his head back in the game.

oh yeah, the player of the year pish bestowed upon Herman Munster. A central defender in a team that chucked away a 7 point lead twice had nothing to do with Caldwell did it? I couldnt give a stuff about player of the year awards. The SPL trophy should be in paradise and it is not and whilst it is not singularly the fault of Caldwell, he played a part in that disgraceful season past. Some folks on here love him because he made less mistakes last season and was improving on his previous * poor error strewn efforts. he is an average defender and nowhere near good enough for the money being banded about in his supposed demands for a new contract.

The real players of the year were over at the citadel of hate in the shape of bougherra and boyd. one of them is a defender who defends and can also play a bit and the other is a torn faced * who scores 30 goals a season against teams you need to beat to win the title (we slag him for his * poor efforts against us but look at the teams we couldnt beat last year) and they have the SPL trophy and a * easy Champions League group that a decent Celtic team would skate through. Never mind, we can console ourselves with the thought that Gary Caldwell was player of the year.

given the support he gets on here, I guess we better get him snapped up on a 5 year contract otherwise the Circus will have him on a Bosman :bbpd:

I wouldn't risk mcManus against an in form Hibs team,he's not up to speed..needs game time but not in this one!
I'll stick with Caldwell for the mo but anymore slips put O'Dea in.

yes I want to win the league too, that's why the best SPL defender has to play. O'Dea is a good lad, but I'd rather have a 80% fit Caldwell than a 100% fit O'Dea. they (still) are worlds apart.

only 2 spl games though. dropping the main CB, mind you he's the one that organizes our defence, is too early imo. I would only drop a player of his calibre if there is no other solution. people underestimate the importance of his presence. source: 10 years of cb experience.

our defence has looked much worse without him as far as I can remember.

Actually we're both wrong, he didn't play at Aberdeen as he was suspended.
Defense didn't look like it was in shambles there either.

The way you talk we can never drop any fking player. Anybody can come up with a bs excuse not to drop x or y "based on 10 years of qq experiencce". If that's the case why do we bother having such a big side at all? This is the same fking problem we had with McManus.

He's not playing his best and the world isn't going to fall apart without him. O'Dea and Loovens have proven to be capable in his absense.
