FRANCIS JEFFERS has been shown the door by Sheffield Wednesday after his violent attack on Port Vale skipper Tommy Fraser.

Jeffers has been stung with the maximum fine of a fortnight's wages and placed on the transfer list by the Owls.

The one-time England striker was shown a straight red card in the 37th minute of the Carling Cup clash after he head-butted and punched Fraser while the pair were running off the ball.

Second-half goals from Kris Taylor and Rob Taylor saw 10-men Owls crash out 2-0, leaving Wednesday boss Brian Laws furious.
Laws said: "His conduct was totally unacceptable and something this football club will not tolerate from any player.

"We have therefore enforced the heaviest punishment available to the club with immediate effect and transfer-listed the player.

"The kind of behaviour enacted on Tuesday night is completely unacceptable and does not represent what Sheffield Wednesday stands for and clearly sets a bad example for the game of football."

Former Arsenal and Everton forward Jeffers called Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning to apologise for his actions, revealing that he had not yet spoken to Laws or contacted Fraser to say sorry.

As a "Wednesdayite" I'm obviously happy with that, the bloke has done nothing in his time at Hillsborough except for being out injured and getting himself sent off.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, I just hope he never appears in an Owls shirt again.

The only problem though, who would want to buy a total liability??

a bit harsh here is it not? this kind of thing happens all the time in football! so much for standing by the player eh! i think a big club fine and a stint in the reserves and whatever the efa had in mind would have done. but sacking the guy for that!!

Where does it say that he's been sacked?

All Wednesday have done is fine him two weeks wages (the maximum they can) and put him on the transfer list.

He's under contract until the end of the season and Wednesday will continue to pay him regardless of whether he plays in the first team again or not, or unless someone comes in for him.

I think it was just the final straw for the club, obviously on a good wage but has failed to deliver time and time again...
