    WIGAN chairman Dave Whelan has told Celtic: WE got the manager YOU wanted.


    The Hoops were refused permission by Swansea to speak to Roberto Martinez before turning their attention to Tony Mowbray.


    And as Whelan unveiled the Spaniard as Latics boss he insisted: "They were really disappointed that they've not been able to get him.

    "Celtic had a big interest in Roberto.


    "He told me 'Celtic have approached me'. But he told me there was only one team he wanted to go to - Wigan."


    The Hoops turned their attention to Martinez after failing to land Burnley boss Owen Coyle.
    But the former Motherwell star insists he wasn't even close to taking the Parkhead job.


    He said: "This was the only job that could have taken me from Wales.

    "There was interest from clubs in Spain and Celtic, but I never looked into them, although their interest is very flattering."

    He'll go to Wigan, he'll sit mid table, nobody will care or notice him and his career will go on like that for a bit.

    If he came here, he'd be in the spotlight every week, his stock would rise if we won leagues etc and then he would have secured a move to a big club in England or Spain.

    Listen, iv no doubt we did show interest in him, but both Lawell and Reid said at the press conference this morning that it was a 3 week process getting Mowbray. So i dont think our interest in Martinez was that serious. Why the * is Whelan trying to wind celtic up?

    I may be totally wrong but isn't Whelan the guy from JJB sports who set up some sort of exclusive deal to sell hun replica shirts a few years back? Maybe he's been turned to the dark side by Murray and his minions.

    its clear martinez is dillusional anyway he expects wigan to get into europe in 3 years time. Eh no with Spurs, Man City, Villa, Everton all sniffing around you wont.

    IMO we got the perfect man for the job and his press conference proved that today.

    he is trying to wind us up for two main reasons

    1. Wigan are not exactly household names in the world of football and he is using a tactic trying to make them look bigger than us, this tactic is normally reserved for the primary school playground, so he is a wee fud and i bet i can pee higher up the wall than he can !

    2. isn't mr whelan's financially struggling JJB sports chain the official merchandise supplier for Satan's All Stars from Govan? that might expain his narrowminded approach, lest he forget we dont shop there anymore and we Celtic fans have considerable clout when it comes to making a point ie the drastic reduction in circulation of the Daily Ranger and Sunday Mason
