SPL Setanta cash shock | The Sun |Home Scotland|Scottish Sport

SCOTTISH football is facing a brutal financial body blow as TV firm Setanta bid to CUT the cash they pour into our game.

While Sky give the EPL a lifeline, the rug gets pulled from under the SPL because of it.

    * them, they signed a contract and they should be held to it and I'm sure all the SPL clubs will do so.

Is there anyway back for the SPL to Sky?

    * these *, they signed the deal and should be held to it. If the shoe was on the other foot and clubs were trying to back out of a deal then they would be raising *. Arseholes!

if setanta didnt want the spl i think sky would still take it but would really be a low price - The OFD gets ALOT of attention

i always thought sky should do an Old firm deal just showing us and the huns playing the shiter sides

looks like Setanta will go down the swannee sooner rather than later. They have overexposed themselves to far too many sports. Losing one of the EPL packages has hit them hard. Celtic's business model is well placed to avoid any fallout of a collapse of the Setanta deal. Infact, it would suit us to go back to Sky. Much bigger exposure for the greatest club in the world IMO.

I'm sure all the teams will stick together and demand full payment of the contract terms, not that it would be of much use if Setanta went belly up.

The minute they got the EPL I said it was going to be the end of there funds. just like sky before them.

The low amount is not because they think we are not worth it but because they don't want us anymore. they know it wont be excepted.

The SPL have the prime time slot at the moment and i'm sure Setanta will want to put a stop to that. They would rather have the time slots for the EPL games and throw us out to Friday night or there abouts.

We can't complain though as we got a great deal from them when no one else was willing bail us out.

In fairness, this is a similar situation as to what happened to the English Championship clubs some years back with ITV Digital. However, Setanta are contractually obliged to pay x money to the SPL every year, unless they can successfully renegotiate their deal. I think the SPL should reconsider the whole deal with Setanta and seek assurances re the screening of Scotland's top flight, otherwise terminate the deal and seek a new broadcasting partner, or perhaps, Celtic should go it alone like other clubs on the continent and negotiate its own deal for televising Celtic games.

But they had the lolly to bid for the next sky packages and failed in those bids.

EPL clubs do better as group than individuals. Celtic should try to ensure that we have a decent league to play in otherwise it would be bad for us too.

With the exception of the top four, the collective bargaining of the EPL helps a lot. The top four could quite easily operate on their own, if needs be. TBH the SPL this year has been rubbish, and Celtic should have had this league won around Christmas. We've thrown away far too many games this year. Ensuring we have a decent league to play in? Then it's not the SPL, as the rest of the teams are not able to complete with us (or the Huns) on or off the park.

Thats the reason the Premiersihip is so strong, they stayed as a group whereas the likes of other teams in europe went it alone and dont get anywhere near as much.

I was not aware that they did

Sky did the same thing to us when they increased their game intake of English games.
They wanted to move us to a different time slot with less money and that is why the SPL told them to f**k off

SKY where glad to get rid of us, they wont have us back.

Celtic are a package deal which include the rest of the SPL. why do you think the league has not been increased. TV don't want to know when it comes to crap stadia and low support.

When the SPL where advertising there brand they had a chance with saying the best 12 teams in Scotland, because it doesn't sound that bad, once you have had us for a few years you start to realise apart from Rangers and Celtic, it is still crap with the 12

you mean the top four is so strong; you take out Manure, Liverpool, Chelski and Arsenal from the the EPL, then i doubt Murdoch would be shelling out close to £2 billion a time just to have exclusivity for the rest of EPL. the other sixteen need the top four, more than the top four needs them.
