So who would make up your list of the 5 Greatest football managers?

    Heres mine:

Jock Stein - What can i say about the big man? Celtics greatest ever manager. 10 League titles, 9 Scottish Cups, 6 League Cups and of course the big one, the European Cup. Love the guy and will be forever grateful what he did for our club.

Brian Clough - Absolute Legend. Took both Derby County and Nottingham Forest from Second Division strugglers to English Champions. Then even more remarkable, made Forest Champions of Europe....TWICE!! 3 English League titles, 4 League Cups, 1 European Super Cup and 2 European Cups.

Sir Alex Ferguson - Manchester Uniteds longest serving manager and his honours speak for themselves.....3 Scottish League Titles, 4 Scottish Cups, 1 Scottich League Cup, 10 English League Titles, 5 FA Cups, 3 English League Cups, 8 Charity Shields, 2 European Cups, 2 Uefa Cup Winners Cups, 2 European Super Cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. Phenomenal record.

Bob Paisley - 9 years in charge of Liverpool, 44 years in total at the club. True Liverpool legend. 6 English League Titles, 3 League Cups, 5 Charity Shields, 3 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 1 European Super Cup.

Sir Matt Busby - This was a tough one for me, it was either Busby or Bill Shankly, but opted for Sir Matt due to his superior honours list, although Shankly did take Liverpool from bottom of the second division to English Champions. Busbys record stand at 5 English League Titles, 2 FA Cups, 5 Charity Shields and 1 European Cup. He managed to achieve this while builing a new Man Utd side after the 1957 Munch Disaster.

    Thoughts??

Helenio Herrera, was successful at Inter, winning 3 Italian Titles and the European Cup. Also has successful stints at Barcelona and Athletico Madrid.

Do you think those managers with the exception of ferguson do well in todays game because they liked to build a team around youth and probably 2 to 3 years before they saw success too many clubs want instant success and dont give managers enough time ... thoughts ?

I was thinking that myself. In those days, you had to work with the players you had at your disposel. Managing a team was more about making the players you had better and making the most of what you had.

Your right, back in the 50s, 60s and 70s managers were givin a lot more time to turn a team around.....6 years beore Busby won the league, 3 years before Shankly got Liverpool into the First Division and 6 years before Ferguson won the league with United.

When you think about it we will never again see managers like the above because most can buy their way to success and not work to it imo. Make me man city manager and ill have the league wrapped up next season. But really we will never see the likes of clough stein busby etc again men who spoke you listened men who players respected and wanted to play for them no matter the club. Football was better then imo.

Alex ferguson is probaly one of the last managers who is old school ,Arsene Venger has got a great eye for young fresh talent without spending megabucks compared to some of his rivals ,he could go on to become a great .

Absolutely. Football back then must have been much more exciting, I mean anybody could challenge for the league, all you need was a decent manager. Brian Clough with Derby and Forest for example.

40 years ago it was the manager that made a club successful, not the players.

Exactly the same as mine. Except I'd have Shankly in for Busby.

Probably the same here. But they're all British. Surely there's been a foreign coach somewhere who's worthy of a mention?

Ćiro Blažević is a good NT manager. Otto Rehhagel is skillful-taking Greece to victory in 2004 wasn't expected, but he pulled it off.

Foreign managers worth a metion include Rinus Michels ( Ajax, Barcelona, Holland) , Ernst Happel ( Double European Cup winner with Hamburg and Feyenoord) and and Miguel Munoz, the legendery Real Madrid manager, 9 Spanish Titles and 2 European Cups.

These three would make up up my 6 - 10 in my top 10, along with Shankly and probably Arsene Wenger.

Good choices, a non Brit would be Ottmar Hitzfeld.

Won the champions league and everything else with Dortmund and Bayern. countless trophies and a great person as well.
