    Q. Who started fight in the street? A. Neil Lennon | The Sun |Home Scotland|Scottish News

CELTIC legend Neil Lennon started a * street brawl that saw him battered unconscious, a court heard yesterday.

The former Hoops skipper said he could only remember leaving a pub — before everything went blank and he woke up sprawled on the ground.

    Bust-up ... * saw 'push'

But bar manager James * told how he saw the 37-year-old star push one of his alleged attackers, David Whitelaw and Jeffrey Carrigan, before a fight broke out.

Whitelaw’s defence lawyer David Phinn asked if Lennon had started the bust-up — and the pub boss replied: “I would say so, from my point of view, yes.”

Lennon was appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday as Whitelaw, 47, and Carrigan, 43, went on trial accused of assaulting him after an Old Firm match.

Mr * told how he was standing at the entrance to the Ubiquitous Chip in Glasgow’s West End, when a pal said: “I think Neil Lennon’s going to get into a fight.”

The bar chief added: “I turned and I saw Neil Lennon shove a man on the chest with both hands.

“Another guy either punched or slapped Neil Lennon and thrust him forward again.

“Neil Lennon then tried to punch the guy that he pushed originally and he tried to punch him back.

“They were both punching and kicking at each other and Lennon fell to the ground.”
    Crying

Mr * claimed both men — who deny the charges — then kicked Lennon where he lay, before fleeing shouting: “You’ll no talk to me like that again.”

Parkhead coach Lennon told how he said goodbye to a pal as he left a pub in Ashton Lane on September 1 last year, just hours after Celtic’s 4-2 home defeat to Rangers.

He said: “The next thing I remember I was lying on the ground and somebody was dabbing my face.

“My next recollection is waking up in hospital with my fiancée sitting at the end of the bed crying.

“I knew something had happened but I didn’t know what, I was just lying with my face cut up.”

He added: “I suffered from dizzy spells for a few weeks afterwards.

“I was pretty upset, pretty disappointed and paranoid for a while.”

The former Hoops midfielder later picked out Whitelaw in a police identity parade but could not tell officers how he knew him.

Whitelaw and Carrigan were also ID’d by medical students Jonathan Bone, 21, and Louise Bradley, 26.

The students spotted the pair in a pub called Nude before the alleged attack. And Mr Bone told the jury Whitelaw was wearing a chain with a Rangers FC crest.

After leaving the bar, Miss Bradley said she heard someone shout “Ya * *” and saw two men running at Lennon.

Mr Bone said: “There were two individuals assaulting this man. I recognised the two individuals as the men from the pub.”

The student then told the jury how they went to Lennon’s aid, adding: “He was bleeding from the side of his face and there was blood in his mouth.”

Whitelaw and Carrigan deny assaulting Lennon to his severe injury and carrying out an attack due to religious prejudice. The trial continues.

The boy said Lennon shoved the fella, then one of them had a punch at him, then they were kicking him in the head. Now, I dont know, but if someone gives you a shove, you give them a shove back, maybe a slap, you dont get them on the deck, outnumbered, and boot them in the face.

Scummy * should still go down, cause our star * defense witness still ID'd them !!

Wouldn't read too much into it, this story is different in every paper.

Even in the Record it says that the two guys "ran at him" shouting sectarian abuse before the fight broke out.

It would be understandable if he pushed one of them.

Surprised though there's no mention of Lenny's brief saying the push was defensive or along the line of that.

Will be interesting to read up on the outcome!

... one more version of the story
´Ginger insult´ sparked Lennon attack, court told

    January 15, 2009

GLASGOW (AFP) - Former Celtic captain Neil Lennon suffered a violent assault after an argument with two men which saw them mock him for having ginger hair, a court was told here Wednesday.
The 37-year-old Northern Irishman, now a coach with the Glasgow giants, was punched to the ground and then kicked repeatedly as he lay unconscious, a witness told the High Court in Glasgow.
David Whitelaw, 47, and Jeffrey Carrigan, 43, deny carrying out the assault in the early hours of September 1.
Liam Cameron, 24, a bar worker, said the men apparently mocked Lennon about his side’s defeat that day to Old Firm rivals Rangers and insulted his ginger hair colour.
He told the court he believed the men had first spoken to Lennon about the football result.
"Neil Lennon’s reaction was the finger," Cameron said. "The men also called Mr Lennon a ginger c***," he added.
"Mr Lennon then said ‘What did you call me?’."
Cameron, who was smoking a cigarette outside after finishing work in nearby bar Jinty McGinty’s, heard raised voices and went to see what was happening. He found Mr Lennon "face-to-face" with one of the men.
The men involved in the attack were referred to as number one and number two in court.
Cameron said: "As I walked round, I saw an argument between number one and Mr Lennon, and number two punched Mr Lennon on the side of the head.
"Neil Lennon went down backwards, his shoe came off. He hit his head on the cobbles when he went down."
This left him "completely, completely unconscious", Cameron said.
He added: "He was kicked in the head a few times, I am not sure exactly how many times, more than three."
Cameron said the attack only came to an end when he intervened, pushing one of the men away from Lennon as he lay unconscious in the street.
Prosecutor Mark Allan asked Cameron if he witnessed Lennon being physically aggressive during the incident.
"Nothing physical but his mannerisms kind of suggested that he was not happy with what had been said," Cameron replied.
David Phinn, representing Whitelaw, asked: "Would you agree that Mr Lennon obviously wanted to confront these men about what had been said?"
He replied: "I would say that he was upset about what he had been called and he walked in their direction."
    The case continues.
