Not being in Europe looked like being a nightmare. but don't you think it has given GS a bit of an opportunity to look at what he's got, build up and execute his tactics, and then look to europe next year? it now gives us a better chance domestically, with less fatigue attributed to the squad.

Number one aim for any new celtic manager is to mount a good challenge or indeed win the SPL in the first season. we all know the history of our performances in the CL and imo it is of paramount importance that we win the SPL and favourably an added domestic trophy.

Europe has hindered rangers this season, with prso already complainin about the number of games to play. if we had of qualified for the CL, put up a good showin in the group stages but failed to win the league, GS' head would be on a plate. full attention is focused on the spl and with, as you say, a fresher squad, that is fully within our reach.

was artmedia a blessing in disguise? we'll see in May.

Have to disagree, getting into europe was GS's first test, yes it probably came too early but the scoreline and going out at that stage is inexcusable. Cant stand seeing the huns in the CL while we're not.

Getting put out of Europe was kinda a good thing, it means we can concentrate more on the spl and sit back, relax and watch the huns suffer :56:

what really could we have achieved?

    place in the 2nd round?

the only benefit to come out of that is financial and pride.
we were proud in 2003 and gained recognition - we also won no silverware.

Well I perssonally would be delighted with second round. If this is the attitude you have then we will NEVER win any european silverware. You cant seriously expect us just to not care about progressing in the competition because we're not likely to win it. As for the seville year, well I'd take that again every year, those memories are worth as much as the trophy mate. Also would you be proud of Celtic if they won the way Porto did?

mate, the UEFA cup is remembered for those who win, not those who came runner-up, doesnt matter how you win it at the end of the day.

as for my previous comments about the CL, i was placing it in the context of GS in his first season here. if he wins the SPL his job is safe and its time to build. if we had qualified for the CL, i would have feared for the worst on the domestic front. easy option is best to settle into your post and get the cynics off yer back.

i have ambitions for this club, difference between mine and yours is my ambitions seem more realistic in the present time. Y'know what they say about Rome an all that.

Gives him time to build and develope team with a little less pressure. Also with Europe he would have been more likely to stick with the old guard for experience which would have hindered the developement, ironically, it is due to doing that we went out.

Playing against European opposition can only be good experience for players and the club. I'm gutted we never went further this year, Euro nights at Parkhead are special. I just don't agree that not being involved has been good for our SPL aspirations. we should have the depth and talent in the squad to win the SPL and progress in Europe, we are Glasgow Celtic FFS!!!!!

I've read some sh*te in threads before, but, this thread takes the biscuit!!! How can anyone justify that not playing European football is a bonus for us?? Total bollocks!!! These are the games that get the blood boiling, not playing ICT or Falkirk!! These type of games are only potential banana skins and I would rather be watching the likes of Barca, Inter, Bayern, Juve etc, etc, etc.. Roll on the European League and lets get to * outa this mickey mouse league. I wish we had called the rest of the premier league teams bluff a couple of years ago, maybe we would have been playing better sides by now!!

Its not, *, as you eloquantly put it, its peoples' personal opinions. my point was that when GS came here all i wanted was the SPL this season, then push for bigger things. i miss those european nights, but last season i missed the prospect of the championship flag being unveiled much more.
prioritise: Premier League title or a few glamour ties???

Where are you going with that European League and moving to the English League bullshit, that will never EVER happen for a million reasons.

Not being in Europe means that we are only 3 points behind Hearts and not 9. Hearts WILL last the pace unless they have an injury crisis.

Prediction: Rangers will crash out of the Group in 4th and we'll have the treble and Hearts will take the other CL spot for next season. Rangers will be in the Euro Cup next season = more matches than the CL = injury/fatigue = slip away into mid table.

Winning the league, Two cups and beating The Bosch (Huns) are all great but I think the best games are those magic European nights at Celtic Park and I miss them this season and I'm still quite * off that we're not in it.

i'd rather win the league so when rangers get dumped out of the champions league at least we can rub it in that we are the champs.

you have to do well in the league to get there so whats the point in rankgers being in it this season and not finishing top 2? * all point really, the SPL is the main thing that counts and the CL is a nice bonus.
