Loovens was their no.1 target this summer, they admitted that and they wanted Brown very badly indeed so thats not senationalist either.

McCoist is being groomed to take over from Smith, Smith admitted that too

And domestic multimedia isnt a significant income stream at all for us, we aren't in the EPL

lol Don't make me defend the huns. :52::54:

We also wanted K.Thomson very badly and Lafferty too. The win-win opinion of Celtics transfer dealings there is a little bit OTT.

And the bit about McCoist is I know that he's being groomed to take over Smith, but that's as an extension of the current Smith regime for long in the future but to suggest it is purely to avoid having to take in another manager and save a few pennies is pretty ludicrous to me.

Finally Leeds were not successful, spent £100 million in one season and went downhill from there - wheres the correlation?

As I say the writer has a lot of decent points but has cranked the tabloid-ometer up beyond max on almost every occasion.

**DISCLAIMER** I hate the huns, hope they rot but equally value reason so don't bother abusing me!

It DEFINITELY is to the media giants looking at new TV football deals over the next 10 years.

Spending vast sums of money chasing a European dream and just falling short to then being crippled with debt?

Leeds reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2001, Rangers would have reached the final if they beat Moscow in their final game of the 92-93 season.

The direct comparison is pretty stark imo, only difference being the timescales it took for them to fall from grace.

McCoist is a unproven manager, when was the last time that happened at Rangers??

I think the scale of money spent, the timescale and the domestic situations are not too comparable.

For example Leeds universally disastrous management and then downward spiral coincided with the emergence of the EPL as a force and particularly "the big 4".

Also bearing in mind Rangers are in peril but I'm dubious as to they will be decimated so much that they will be of zero threat to Celtic this season or the near future.

Regardless, my main point with that article is that at every opportunity points are taken to the absolute tabloid extreme without much concern for any reason and the newspaper like quality of the writing fails to hide that from me.

I don't mean to go over this one point as it is one of many I had issue with in the article, but such continuations of regimes happen all the time in football - Quieroz the natural successor to Ferguson etc. I'm not saying it works I'm just saying to suggest it is a desperate money save is really contriving a point out of nothing...

They won't ever not be a threat unless it gets very, very serious. We were never not a threat to them even when we were on our knees and finishing further down the league than I care to remember.

I can just see personally the comparison with Leeds and Rangers both having terrible financial management, * nilly spending and having very little realisation of the consequences of chasing a dream. I get the fact they operate on different levels both in terms of the league and the volume of money but in relative terms they are pretty much comparable.

Quieroz had a CV to back him up and he's now the Portugese coach.

    What does McCoist have??

I think you're missing my point. I don't doubt that McCoist will/would be a * manager. In the eyes of Rangers though he would be used to extenuate what is perceived as a successful regime. Grooming him solely to save cash? My point is this is another case of the writer contriving something to raise eyebrows.

    Hammer:
Similarly, I think the comparison to Leeds is arguable and there are certain parrallels; but again the writer has gone all out to sensationalise matters, especially with comparisons with SPL teams gone into administration.

Leeds and Rangers are not on the same planet.

the difference being not the figue that Rangers are in debt by but
    Getting out of debt well........
there is more money supporting Rangers around the world than there would ever be supporting Leeds.
Push comes to shove and there will be people outside Ibrox just waiting to step in.
Remember Fergus McCann was not the only one that wanted to buy Celtic.
If you look at history he walked away with a profit , so in reality we the supporters put Celtic where thay are now

Fergus speculated to accumulate, nothing wrong with that. In reality he saved the club and the fans helped him do so. Take no credit away from what he did for Celtic

From what im seeing this threads going away from the whole Nike deal situation lol...

I just want to say - just under £6million a year in sponsorship is probably if not definately the most lucrative contract we've ever seen.

Excellent piece of business, i'm guessing Lawwell would be dealing with this?

    Magic.

Am not really wanting to get into this debate fully as i've not read the full article yet, but considering what's happening with they manky * the now it's not a totally unjustified 'assumption' to make as they are in dire straights. And the use of the word 'solely' might be a bit wide of the mark, but i would think it's got a lot to do with it all things considered.
