Kljestan heading to Celtic for trial

Sacha Kljestan could be the next MLS player heading for a transfer to Europe, but it could be contingent on him impressing one storied and interested club
According to sources, Kljestan has left U.S. national team camp to join Scottish champions Celtic on a trial that could lead to a sale of the Chivas USA midfielder. Sources tell SBI that MLS and Celtic have discussed a $3.5 million transfer that could go through if Kljestan impresses Celtic coaches in the coming weeks.
The move, and potential transfer could be one of the driving forces behind Chivas USA drafting Wake Forest midfielder Michael Lahoud rather than goalkeeper Stefan Frei in the 2009 MLS Draft.
Kljestan wouldn't be the only American at Celtic if he is sold. Goalkeeper Dominic Cervi is in the process of securing his Italian passport to complete his deal with Celtic. New York-based agent Ron Waxman told SBI that Cervi should have his deal completed very soon.
What do you think of Kljestan potentially signing with Celtic? Would it be a good club for him?

That kid from Bosnia is more expensive than Sascha... I think his going rate was 3.5mil+ pounds, quite different obviously. I'm skeptical he can make an impact and he isn't as young as Crosas or even Brown, but we'll see.

I watched all the games in that group and thought Sacha was a weakpoint of the team. US didn't play the Dutch off the field but maybe 10 minutes in the second half when the young Dutch got cocky after making the US look like children in the first half. McBride didn't work for the US specifically because there was no service (esp in the Japan game, where one blogger wrote "McBride probably wishes Uchida was on his team right now.")
I've seen Edu outside Olympics as well and I'm impressed. He's solid. Maybe not quality yet, but he probably will be in the future. Sacha is just MLS quality. I don't think he's good enough to cut it in Europe.
And for that price, it's ridiculous. McCourt cost a fraction of that... and I'd rate him higher (different role than this guy but you get my point).

I would rather give these largley unknown footballers a trial, remember Scheidt cost us £5 mil, would have been good to have given him a trial first don't you think?

    Kljestan To Train With Celtic

Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan will train with Scottish champions Celtic Football Club starting Saturday, the Los Angeles-based Major League Soccer club announced today.
A 23-year-old product of Huntington Beach, Calif. and U.S. Soccer’s 2008 Young Male Athlete of the Year, Kljestan departed the U.S. Men’s National Team’s camp this evening, California time, en route to Scotland, where he will join Celtic at its Lennoxtown training center near Glasgow. After training with Celtic coach Gordon Strachan’s squad (currently in the second half of its 2008-09 Scottish Premier League season), Kljestan is scheduled to return to Southern California on Jan. 22, ahead of the United States’ Jan. 24 international friendly versus Sweden at The Home Depot Center.
A product of Huntington Park High School and a first-round draft pick out of Seton Hall University (2006), Sacha Kljestan enjoyed a breakout year in 2008, his third season as a pro, earning MLS Best XI honors after leading Chivas USA in assists (7) and goals (5, tied) in 22 league matches played, while being named the club’s 2008 MVP and Budweiser Golden Boot Winner. On the international level, Kljestan was named U.S. Soccer’s Young Male Athlete of the Year, after representing his country at the Beijing Olympics, where he scored two goals in three matches for the U.S., including a strike against Holland that was voted U.S. Soccer’s ‘Best Goal of 2008’. For the senior U.S. National Team, Kljestan has appeared in 11 matches since his 2007 debut, including four World Cup Qualifiers in 2008.

    ***

I'm on record that this would be a good long-term signing but based on his game it may take him a while to bed in and get used to Scottish football. Before all the MLS bashers start in lets consider that this could be a very good move for the club on a number of fronts.

In the US, Rangers have cornered whatever coverage the SPL gets from the US Soccer media (and that is only passing comments), Celtic is looking to expand thier appeal in this market.

Kljestan is a player with loads of skill and potential and if you go back to my previous comments, the biggest problem I have with his game (which I like) is consistently putting it all together. Getting him into an environment where is training and playing against quality players and he has to fight for his place in the squad every day may be exactly what it takes to get him to the next level.

Assuming our midfield as it is currently comprised stays for the remainder of the season can we be sure: Nakamura won't return to Japan in the summer, Brown and/or McGeady wont have bids put in (and accepted) by Premiership sides, Donati gets on his bike and goes home to Italy? Plus remember Robson is 30 and Hartley is 32.

There is no doubt he is capable of playing at this level and as a US supporter I would like nothing more than to have the SPL toughen him up a bit.

He will be playing somewhere in Europe next year I hope it is here.

four leaf clover, just cant get enough.
I think its for 3m US, which by the time this deal gets done could exchange rate could bring that to about 4 BSP.

I'd like to see an American on the team, Im just not sure this is the right choice. I would have liked to see them take a run at Guzan last year.
