I know we've discussed films a million times on here and it's always the same titles trotted out; Shawshank, Big Lebowski, etc. (which are both excellent films, BTW). What I'd like to try is something a wee bit different: let's hear about some films that aren't very well known, but which you think should be recognised. I'll tender "The Ninth Configuration":

it's an unofficial sequel to "The Exorcist", that has sweet FA to do with the original subject matter. It's set in a mental hospital full of ex-military, who may or may not be faking, in order to get out of military service. It's central theme is the existence of * and it's * brilliant. There's a memorable scene where an astronaut aborts a rocket take-off at the last minute and is dragged of the shuttle, scream: "THERE'S NOTHING UP THERE!". An excellent film. Anyone else?

Suicide Circle... it's a cultish film about disaffected youth (and then adults) killing themselves in Japan.
The opening scene alone is worth it... lots of blood, lots of gore, plenty of "* just happened?" The plot goes from being a good whodunit to "Charles Manson of the information age" to a counsel of creepy philosophical kids "Do you know yourself? To be connected to yourself, you have to know yourself."

Henry : Portrait of a Serial Killer

It was made for $50,000 maybe 20 years ago. It is truly disturbing and it doesn't glamourise violence in any way. Absolutely gripping.

Oldboy, a korean film with amazing fight scenes, and an intruiging plot.

Some of the fight scenes are mesmerizing.

El Día de la Bestia (The Day of the Beast) - Spanish black comedy about the prohpecies of the antichrist converging on modern day Madrid. Excellent and odd. The priest is a classic.

(yeah - I've mentioned it before, but it's well worth a look. )

    The Closet, or Le Placard

It's a French comedy made in 2001. Totally hilarious.
    Gerard Depardieu is in it.

A few interesting titles that I'll try and download. Primer is an excellent indie film about time-travel, but not in a Back to the Future kind of way. It's more about what might actually happen and avoiding yourself in the past. El Topo is insanity. Better seen than described, and I recently bought Tears of the Black Tiger; a film I saw a few years ago and which is bananas: an ultra-hardcore Thai Western, that's an explosion of colour and severe violence. Brilliant!
