dont know if the songs having been used as a finger to them during Rangers 9 is a good reason to keep them - id rather completley forget that period TBH. Never made sense singing about violent politics in Ireland as some sort of consolation prize for winning nothing and made us look like hate filled scum to the whole population not just the huns. Thats why people still say 'ach theyre as bad as each other'. Its now a better place for family intertainment and you dont want to drag another generation into the chip on shoulder mentality, obsessing about wars and defiance etc. There a thin line between keeping tradition and being stuck in the past and being bitter.

very true. I think we tend to overlook this fact. Tims are not some sort of superrace without low brow neddy types.

    Hi Tricolour.

I agree with a lot of what you say. All these songs are in my history, my families history & a great majority of the supporters history but they are have nothing to do with FOOTBALL HISTORY.

By the way I am not a new wave. Celtic since 1948.

i know plenty of people who do /have sung songs like that all through my life but to be honest I for one dont want my club to have anything to do with marches or such like as it has nothing to do wih football . I love the banter and the singing eg at old firm games thats healthy but not the ira * . Rangers where a club that openly didnt sign catholics so they always had more of a problem with it than us BUT i like the fact that we have all religions happy to suport our team and that we are not associated with bigotry in the same way a the huns . We have a great reputation worldwide and unless we can rid ourselves of this nonsense we will be dragged down with them and always be held back

:50: Yup. At this point, I'm beginning to believe the people pushing this dozy 'what have these songs got to do with football?' debate are being deliberately obtuse. Perhaps because Celtic's Irishness makes them uncomfortable? But like it or not Celtic are as much a focal point of Irish identity in Scotland as they are a football club, and the history of Ireland is as relevant to a large (the most fervent) proportion our supporters as the history of football. The Fields of Athenrye has nothing to do with football but it's very relevant to the heritage of Celtic supporters. You'll never walk alone has nothing to do with football either but it clearly strikes a collective chord in the psyche of Celtic supporters. As do songs about the struggles for irish independence and unity. The argument doesn't hold water.

The only argument to be made against these songs is that the offend people, but since they aren't racist, sectarian or bigoted I can't see why anyone who sings them should give a *. If we're gonna appease all the people we offend we'd have pull the tricolour down from over the Jungle & change our name to Glasgow Saltire. * 'em. I'm more interested in keeping our identity than becoming some sort of 'marketable brand'. The day i hear Celtic fans singing about being up to our knees in * blood, about peadophillia, about sending whole races back to where they came from then I'll be the first to push to have 'vocal minorities' suppressed (In actual fact i would stop supporting the club because that's not the Celtic I know). Until then, LTPS!

Thank goodness I realised early enough in life that I was only doing it for some kind of bravado reasons. Probably was impressed by the older people around me.

i find this post quite insulting, if it wasn't for the fact my both sets of my grandparent moved over here during the troubles then i wouldn't be here today, i know exactly what they went through and what these songs stand for, so because you have been going to see celtic for many years now, doesn't mean that no one else knows what they stand for, lets get it straight, the songs stand for a TERRORIST GROUP nothing more nothing less, everyone knows it, what the * they have got to do with celtic , i don't know. Sorry but your no better than anyone because you decided to go to celtic park and sing pathetic songs about terrorist, do ppl not realize there are more important things in life??

yes i hear what your saying and in a way i agree, i am a republican..!
but the fact still remains, the sfa and the spl have ruled that singing these songs are in breach of the rules!!

we will get slammed for it as will the huns..can we not be a step in front of them and cut it out?
