Brendan Rodgers Discussion Thread

Discussion in 'Celtic Chat' started by Lewis Kerr, Jun 19, 2023.

  1. The board apologised after the last transfer window and this is shaping to be worse. What sort of club has 2 games to qualify for the CL and doesn’t maximise their chances. If he walks, no wonder

  2. Its not fear.. it is the reality..

    Nobody needs any encouragement..

An injury to Maeda and we're looking at Yang and Forrest starting..

  3. Well stop wishing it on us.

I'm not going to entertain this bullshit anymore.

  4. Rodgers shat it pass it on.

  5. :56:

We've had to entertain your 'Constant bullshit' so you'll just have to swallow it..

  6. I'm holding on to the 1% hope that its a great conspiracy everyone is in on except the fans and signings are coming in under the radar

I'm usually mr positive and ive probably made every excuse for them over the years trying to give the benefit of doubt but I think fans anger this time round is not over reactionary. Literally 10's of reasons, which are on the spectrum of 'really bad'
Fans need assurance that their club is moving forward, because if not then whats the point of us showing support?
If our love for Celtic is being exploited then that feels like the biggest insult possible.

That's where my anger comes from and I try to explain my anger rather than express it. Doesn't make a difference to those with all the power though.

  9. A sensible, measured and calm post.

I understand the expectations, frustrations and impatience of our fans, and I share that fully, with one caveat, I'm too long in the tooth to get my knickers in a twist over it.

Let's see where we stand come the end of the transfer window, and post Qualifer and Ibrox.
Then's the time, and only the time to truly assess the situation.

  10. Dude, I get the frustration, but there's still about 3 and a half weeks left in the window... There'll be more movement, both directions probably, in that time... This is * Celtic after all...

  11. Just looked at transfermarkt and according to that in the last 3 years we’ve sold more then we brought by a considerable margin each year.

    23/24 €18.74m
    24/25 €10.78m
    25/26 €18.29m

You then take into account we have a 60,000 seater stadium and played CL the last 3 years. He has to be fuming and rightly so.

  12. It depends what the refresh involves.

It certainly won't involve a refresh of Peter Lawwell or Desmond or Nicholson.

It'll also involve a refresh of managerial experience as we will definitely, on paper, downgrade.

I personally think if Rodgers was/is willing to stay we'd be mad to not get him on a new deal just for the sake of changing things up cos it's been 3 years. I really don't understand that logic.

A lot of players want to play for a guy like Rodgers as well. That's another carrot. Sadly we aren't taking advantage of that at the moment but Nygren mentioned it in his interview and Tierney has often spoken about him. To name two.

  13. We all know exactly when Rodgers goes stale, because we saw it in his final season here and (due to financial circumstances) at Leicester: when he doesn't feel he is being given the players to do what he is trying to do. He loses motivation and frankly tends to sulk IMO. If someone on the board asked me how to make Rodgers lose motivation and phone in his final season, I'd tell them that this kind of transfer window (so far) should do the trick no bother.

The sad thing is that the ingredients were there to get Rodgers excited and motivated by the possibilities this season and (so far) we're blowing it. The addition of Tierney means we now have a genuine CL quality defence (I rate Trusty) and Maeda is a CL quality striker. We just needed a couple of good wingers, a defensive midfielder and a replacement for Kyogo. Totally doable. Still a few weeks left in the window, but if we don't turn this around, what a wasted opportunity it will be.

Finally, I'll repeat myself and say that Rodgers is levels above what we are likely to get as manager. People talk about managers we were linked with; but I think it is more sensible to look at who we actually got. In the past 16 years since Strachan left, we've made 5 managerial appointments other than Rodgers (who I believe we got due to his personal friendship with DD): Mowbray, Lenny, Ronny, Lenny again, Ange. None of these are bad managers; but only one of them (Ange) is of a comparable level to Rodgers. We can be linked with all sorts of exciting young managers, but history suggests that there is a 4/5 chance the guy we actually get will be a downgrade on Rodgers.

That second line about refreshing the guys upstairs was spot on BTW.

  14. We very well could get someone in who's new and exciting but I really struggle to find any significant hope when it's going to be the same lot overseeing him and setting budgets etc.

If they won't back rodgers they certainly won't back anyone else to the level required. That's the issue.

  15. You're absolutely spot on. I don't think people realise how lucky we are to have a manager of Brendan's calibre in charge. And our board certainly don't. They're too blinded by domestic success and complacency has well and truly set in. Brendan didn't need to come back here, he chose to. And yes he left in * circumstances the first time and left a sour taste in everyone's mouth, but that's in the past and I think its safe to say he's redeemed himself.

After Ange left we were in a tricky spot, and the job he's done in those 2 years has to be applauded. And it doesn't have to end there. We should be backing him 100% and doing all we can to keep him here and improve best we can. Let's be honest as managers go, he's the highest level we could ever hope to have. And if we did luckily get another Ange or someone else they'd be gone in a season or two. With the right backing we can set ourselves up properly for the next 5 years. Its a no brainer right across the board I cannot for the life of me understand what's happening just now.

  16. Agreed, its not over yet and if we bring in someone who fits right into the team and performs for us then it could turn around the whole mood and hopeless outlook.
I'm not really expecting that to happen though tbh. I think our transfer strategy is clear and exposed, we are a laughing stock at this stage. I'm 39 so I started off supporting us in the 90's. I always recognised the 'glass ceiling' that we had and it got worse due to the money south of the border and up until the present day. Having said that, I don't think we should resign ourselves to hopelessness especially considering how much money we are generating. Things can change and we can be competitive but only if we show relative ambition.

Without that we are Zombies because we are going nowhere, just paying our money without any reward.
Its stealing the soul away from us but I do admit that I can get carried away sometimes

  18. I think I'd rather hear from a multiple title winning manager, top *, property magnate multi millionaire over some ginger specky weapon streaming live on a podcast fae his maw's spare bedroom who no * knows and is trying to punt a book on how to the title "how to win the premier league" :56::56::56::56:
