Rate our 8's (or 10s)

Was thinking about how good Nygren could be for us and whether Engels will kick on and it made me think of other attack minded midfielders we've had in the past 10 years and who was the best one.

I'm not including players who are still here but have only been here a year like Engels, McCowan etc. Or McGregor/Broony who became more defensive players over time.

I find them very hard to rank tbh. Could be nostalgia bias, but a certain wizard would top my list.

Difficult bcoz on form some where very good but a lot of them were inconsistent or had poor dips in form. Hatate can have that from one half to the next so iv done it with them all at their best

I think my top 3 is the same with a slightly different order. Interesting you have Christie above Armstrong, I dont necessarily think it's wrong just think it'll be controversial

 

Think both of them had ups and downs and neither were perfect. Just think Christie was more of a goal threat and scored more in Europe.

Mooy would have been higher if he was here longer.

 

Probably a 9

 

In terms of who was the best player for us, judged over their time at Celtic as a whole, I'd go with this:

8. Ryan Christie
9. David Turnbull

In terms of who was the best on the rare occasions when he could be bothered, I'd put Ntcham first and shuffle Rogic, Reo and MOR down one.

Couldn't really stand Ntcham if I'm honest. He's got second last here but actually if I was picking a team to go out and win a game tomorrow he'd be the last player I'd want

I loved Rogic. Was tempted to put Hatate 2nd but MOR shades him in terms of output and consistency

 

Definitely some nostalgia bias, O’Reilly just as inconsistent as Hatate but both equally as good. Rogic could be absolute magic or miles off it as well but they are top 3 by quite a distance.

Armstrong played a massive part for us for a few seasons but always struggled in Europe, Christie similar. Mooy was just too old but showed his quality after a rusty start. Johansen was an athlete and worked well with Broony but just lacked the quality. Turnbull added a lot of goals & assists but so * slow and finally Ntcham was just a moody *, could of been up near the top but his attitude was stinking.

Why do you have Turnbull ahead of Ntcham? Genuine question no offence intended.

 

As I say at the end Ntcham’s attitude was * poor, if he actually played to his ability he’d be top 5. At least Turnbull always gave his all.

Rogic apparently said he couldn't be bothered with football or to some effect and still done what he done , ntcham was just a lazy * with abundance of skill , johansen was class in spells and would've suited a better era , reo is top class but inconsistent, mooy was top drawer but again career coming to an end , strongleg had fine hair , Christie hit the roof of the stadium but other than that was decent and turnbull lacked turning on the baw.

Rating our 8's... That's tough. In fact, I would argue that Celtic's number 8 is perhaps even more overall important/influential/significant/symbolic than those that have worn the No. 7 jersey. Yes, Jinky and Henrik wore the 7, but there have been a lot of pretty ordinary footballers aside from those.

But the 8 is a different story. From the first Celt to wear the 8 in 1960, Willie Fernie (when Celtic started to wear numbers), followed by a notable lineage including John 'Yogi' Hughes and Willie Wallace, through Davie Hay and Bobby Murdoch to Johnny Doyle, before Paul McStay wore it for nearly his entire career, ahead of Craig Burley when the Bhoys 'Stopped the 10'. Since the turn of the millenium, there have been just the 3 and all 3 have undoubtedly left thier mark - Alan Thompson, Scott Brown and Kyogo Furuhashi.

Seriously, it reads like a who's who of Celtic over the past 65-odd years.
