The club try operate at the same sort of level. So, if they make the Champions League, they’ll make £15m-£20m profit. If they don’t make the Champions League and have to settle for the Europa League, they make around a £3m-£5m loss.

It’s not quite as simple as that because we all know that we sell a major player or two nearly every season so we never actually make a loss. However, if we left player trading out of it, the club would make a small loss for non Champions League participation and a large profit from Champions League participation.

 

Might sound drastic but if we end this window without big signings that take us to another level, i want them gone and replaced. It would be the last straw for me. We have had so many chances that dont pop up to often where we could step up quite easily as a elite club but they have * us over several times now. I have always had the feeling that they will take us there and learn from mistakes but im running out of hope.

Yes they are very good at finances and have kept us as one of the richest best run, but you just need to take chances sometimes which they plainly refuse.

 

The new Champions League format is something of a game changer for me. 8 guaranteed games. A broader spread of calibre of oppositions. More performance based incentives for winning and drawing matches. And much easier path to knock out football. A favourable draw could put quarter finals within reach.

With the reserves we have we really should be adjusting to try and take advantage of all of that. Its not like the old format where anything beyond the groups looked pretty unlikely and difficult to budget for.

 

That's a lot easier said than done mate.

 

This is spot on for me, for the next two seasons at least where our league winner is guaranteed only 1 qualifier and certain Europa league football, I feel we need to be putting our best foot forward to make the league phase. Getting 4 out of 5 or 5 of 5 seasons in CL league/group phase is a game changer for a club like ours financially. Something we have never managed I don’t think or certainly for some time.

Any team we could face in the champions path with not have the resources we have at our disposal so we should be looking to make that count for us.

 

Disagree. Its all about sticking in 3-4 million more for a player, which we can afford, not to lose out on those top quality players. Nothing hard really but risky.

Could we afford buying the Romanian striker? Yes we would. They don't really hesitate when putting on criminal prices for tickets and merchandise.

They ironically paid 10+ mill for Idah and Engels which is insanely strange. Its almost like they wanted to prove a point.

The thing is if we dont take the next step we wont see CL football in the near future again as more teams of our calibre invest more.

 

What you say is entirely logical and makes commercial sense but we all know we will be coming out of this window with a 5th successive transfer window of profit which is unforgivable when we are as well resourced as we are.

We have a board devoid of the necessary talent and strategic thinking, all Nicholson and Lawwell can think about is increasing the bottom line. Lawwell never had the vision to become our CEO, he is a very cautious short thinking man. Vast amount of resources and no plan to utilise them.

We are the nepotistic club in Europe, rarely is a coaching, executive or managerial position handed out on merit - its given to an ex player or manager or relative of a board room director. Are Maloney, O'Dea, McManus, Kennedy, Hayes really the best youth team coaches we could find? Was Lennon the best manager we could find? Was Craig Strachan the best scout we could find? Was Gavin Strachan the best coach we could find? Was Mark Lawwell the best head of recruitment we could find? It stinks, we look for company men who won't rock the boat.

 

No, I mean getting rid of the board..

It will be very difficult to get rid of one member currently on the Board never mind the full Board itself, Desmond is majority shareholder and the members on the Board receive his backing at every AGM when they are up for re-election, only way would be fan pressure if it turned ugly but one member would leave and be back at the club within 18 months in an advisory role just like Lawwell resigning as CEO then after all the heat dies down becomes Chairman.

 

This board have overseen the most dominant successful period in our history, but you just don’t feel they are fully invested in maximising our potential.

 

Tbf I could have been in charge of Celtic the last 15 years and been as dominant. We've had nothing to beat.

Its the next level where we need to kick on to and this board seem hesitant to try.

They won't. It's refreshing to see most of singing off the same hymn sheet here. There are a lot of board apologists out there among the Celtic fanbase who view the basket case Rangers have been in their old and new guise for the best part of 20 years and credit our board for being up against a liquidated and newly formed club when we have regressed staggeringly in Europe.

We should be benchmarking ourselves against the Portos, Benficas, Ajax, Brugges, PSV, Feyenoords, Sporting, Salzburgs etc of European football and why we have fallen so far behind them in the past 20 years. We are behind clubs like Bodo, Union SG, Plzen, Gent, Braga, Copenhagen, AZ etc and we qualify for European football every single season. It's embarrassing and its largely down to our board not investing in the squad, the infrastructure, coaching, academies.

We should not be losing the likes of Vata, Cummings, Doak and Dembele from our youth academy. The only reason they leave is money and I don't necessarily blame a young lad or his advisors chasing the money, I doubt Vata or Cummings are on 20k a week are they? If you have them a 3 year deal on 7/8k a week it's roughly an investment of £1m. We have thrown that away on your Kwons and Tilios etc without a seconds hesitation.

The whole club is a shambles from top down due to this board. Lawwell is an accountant, Nicholson a lawyer, that's all they should have been doing at Celtic. Neither of them are fit to be CEOs, they don't have the vision to grow the club. My own opinion if Nicholson is just the face and its still Lawwell makiing the decisions in the background. We should be investing 10s of millions every year in growing our scouting networks, our acadamey budget, our sports science and coaching teams, our recruitment teams, have proper football people developing our transfer strategies, have them armed with a budget to spend, not told they need to sell to buy. The money is their to do that but the vision and expertise is not there with this board.

Does Celtics Report and Accounts publish board objectives realtive to bonuses paid? Always wondered but never took the time to check.

Usually rule one of figuring out how a board operates is to look at what gets them paid!

 

None of that is disclosed, just salary of directors and bonuses but no details on how bonuses are calculated.

 

Just for equivalence.

Feyenoord are signing a CB for €9m off Gent. It will take their spending to €40m this summer. 2x €10m signings, 1 €9m signing and another €3.5m signing.

In their last set of accounts they had a cash reserves figure of €62k in comparison to Celtic's £77m. Celtic have 1241x the amount of cash Feyenoord had in the bank last season. Feyenoord have spent 20x the amount of money on transfers this season Celtic have.

Our club are so out of step with the rest of Europe.

 

So a quick look at Transfermarkt shows their incomings at €27.55M with the total prospective value of loan ends returning as €56.85M.

Their outgoings is a total of €37.63, with a total sum of loanees returning as €72M.

Figures on this are maybe out of whack, but they are definitely NOT spending €40M net. If anything they are in the black.
