  3. I take the opposite view. I really liked Benedict and hope they don't go the Francis route again. For me, our modern way of seeing things is a problem to avoid rather than something to move closer to. I'd like to see someone like Cardinal Sarah get the chance.

But they were both the Pope and had to deal with an incredibly tough job. I hope both of them are OK.

  4. Celtic Football Club would like to express its deepest condolences following the death of Pope Francis who has passed away this morning at the age of 88.

Everyone at the club is saddened by this morning's news and we offer our sincere thoughts and prayers.

    Requiescat in pace.

  5. I think we have to be very careful about that kind of thing. There's clearly something very sick about modern (post-1960s) culture: it destroys families, it destroys the environment, it destroys communities and it is destroying our societies.

That doesn't mean that I think particular individual propositions are wrong (e.g. my own feeling is that we should keep celibacy but that I can't personally see any legitimate reason not to allow female priests; but I know I might turn out to be very wrong about either one) but that we should be very careful about "modernising" the Church until we can figure out exactly what went wrong with our modern societies.

My feeling is that the safer thing for the Church is to stick with tradition until whatever is happening to our societies plays itself out and we have a clearer idea what went wrong. Our societies are dying and we don't want the Church to go the same way.

  9. RIP Pope Francis, I thought he was over the worst but at his age hospital stays really take it out of people, although no John Paul 2 his heart was in the right place.

I don't really understand why anybody liked Benedict but fair enough. The Pope has to modernise with the world, not extreme quick changes but the if they don't move with the times people will move on without you (people already have).

Cardinal Sarah is 80 this year. A pope for the long haul is required. Have a vision and lead it for years to come. He's also too conservative for the modern world.

  17. He was one of the few who spoke out about the atrocities in Gaza, the world did not listen.
    RIP.
