Celtic face a nervy wait to discover the extent of an injury to Kasper Schmeichel.

The goalkeeper suffered a knock in Denmark's extra-time loss to Portugal in the Nations League on Sunday.

Schmeichel, wearing the armband for his country, was in clear discomfort after a problem with his left arm during extra-time of the match

The Celtic No1 appeared to suffer the injury as he attempted to * the ball form Diogo Jota's feet in extra-time.

The forward rounded Schmeichel and scored but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Schmeichel, though, was feeling the effects from his efforts to deny Jota as he clutched his arm before receiving treatment from medical staff.

The goalkeeper would then clearly be seen favouring his arm to try and prevent any further issue having bravely played on.

Schmeichel brilliantly turned a strike over the bar in extra-time after the injury but then could be heard screaming in pain as he landed on the turf.

The Celtic goalkeeper played out all of extra time for his country as they fell to defeat in Portugal to be eliminated from the Nations League.

Earlier in the match, Schmeichel had saved a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Apparently, he went straight to the hospital after the game, sounds like left shoulder or collar bone, the Danish media reckon he will need a long lay off. He was making saves and screaming in pain at the end (Denmark had used all their subs)

Sad for him. Hope for a speedy recovery. Sinisalo's chance now to get game time with no much preassure.

Going to be missed, no question but hopefully Sinisalo steps up and grabs the opportunity. Big gloves to fill, defence needs to be more solid and give him enough protection to help build his confidence. He is a good keeper and a few clean sheets under his belt won't hurt.

Apparently nothing broken, but he is in a lot of pain, going for a MRI scan today. He has a sling on his arm

He started the evening by saving a penalty kick from Cristiano Ronaldo, but the evening in Lisbon ended less happily for Kasper Schmeichel.

The Danish national team goalkeeper unfortunately fell down in connection with a chance for Diogo Jota and received treatment, after which he heroically continued the match, although he was clearly in severe pain.

National coach Brian Riemer told Tipsbladet and the rest of the written press in the minutes after Denmark's 5-2 defeat that he would have '100 percent' replaced Kasper Schmeichel if it had been possible. He didn't, because Denmark didn't have any more substitutions left.

On Monday morning, Tipsbladet spotted Kasper Schmeichel at the airport in Lisbon, and here the Danish national team goalkeeper did not look good, as he had his left arm in a sling after being in the hospital for examination last night.

Worrying for the 38-year-old Danish keeper, who may now face a longer injury break.

Kasper Schmeichel flies to Copenhagen on Monday morning. He will be accompanied by several other national team players, including Victor Kristiansen and Jesper Lindstrøm.

Just about the best time possible for it to happen, if you want to out a positive spin on it. Few wins and the league is wrapped up. If this happened a few months ago it would have been a far bigger issue.

Doctor gives status on Kasper Schmeichel

Initial tests show nothing abnormal in Kasper Schmeichel's shoulder, but the goalkeeper will need an MRI scan

Although Kasper Schmeichel was in obvious pain in Denmark's defeat to Portugal in the Nations League quarter-finals on Sunday evening, he appears to have escaped without major injuries.

In any case, the X-ray examinations after the match showed nothing worrying, says national team doctor Morten Boesen in a written status to Ritzau.

    – Kasper Schmeichel's left shoulder was X-rayed last night, and fortunately the images show nothing abnormal.

    – He is clearly in pain after a fall on his shoulder, so we are examining him further with an MRI scan, says Boesen.

The Danish national team was close to advancing to the semi-finals. It was 2-2 with a few minutes left, and had the score held, Denmark would have advanced 3-2 overall.

But the substituted striker Francisco Trincão put the Portuguese ahead again, and in extra time Denmark ended up with a 2-5 defeat.

The Celtic goalkeeper was injured in the first half of extra time and was treated on the pitch. Despite being in great pain, he completed the match and also made a great save, which clearly worsened his well-being.

National coach Brian Riemer could not have replaced the reserves Mads Hermansen and Filip Jörgensen on the field, as Denmark had used all of its substitutions.

Well at least nothing broken in his shoulder area which is something but still it does sound like we may be without Kasper for the rest of this season which obviously is a big blow for the run in.

That could be literally career ending that kinda layoff at this stage..

    Brutal..

Sinisalo for the remainder of the season, but we'll almost certainly have to dip in to the market for the start of next season now.....possibly a loan..

I wonder if he may just consider retiring rather than going through all the rehab and training that would be required with no guarantee he gets back to anywhere near his best. Especially if it's just for one more season that he'll likely miss a chunk of anyway. He needs to think about his body outside of football and whether it's worth it at his age.

That being said hopefully it's nowhere near as bad as the rumours are indicating.

A huge miss for the team, hopefully Kasper makes a full recovery and I wish him well. All the more reason obvious offsides should be called immediately rather than letting play continue, it would avoid injuries like this happening.
