How to drink whiskey properly

There's an old adage that there's a whisky out there for everyone, and it's mostly true. There is such a huge range of flavour profiles available that there is a very good chance something out there will appeal to pretty much anyone. The problem is most people try 1 (usually a cheap nasty blend) assume they are all the same and never try something different.

The problem now is that with the way whisky prices are going of late I don't blame people for not trying others, it's getting far too * expensive to take a chance on something you may not like. The market is setting itself up for an almighty fall, and it won't be for the first time.

 

One thing is for sure Cooler Than Cool Bhoy we would Salute Big Jock, then have Priceless Banter, some nearly beyond insane, mostly my side, but back to Good Old Bar Level, Errol Flynn getting the Final Salute

 

Was gifted a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for Xmas and recently opened it - and for what it's worth have been blown away by it.

I used to think smokey drams were not my thing, although perhaps because was younger at the time, and still smoked myself or had only recently quit, but back then I wasn't all that impressed with particularly smokey whiskeys.

Perhaps over the course of the past 30-odd years palate has changed or not being a smoker now have suddenly given some re-appraisals, which lead to this. Just the nose of it was instantly smoke and that character follows through and really enjoyed it.

Just purchased a bottle of Lagavulin 8 (because £80 for another of the 16 is a bit beyond my price range at the moment, and still have half a bottle of it anyhow), so going to try the 8 y.o. varient.

Any other good 'smokey' recommendations that are not going to ruin my finances?

The biggest fraudulent, wankery drink ever.

 

Black Bottle is my favourite cheap blend. Probably bought it more than any whisky given its price. Has a bit of smoke to it and it's lovely. Famous Grouse Black is also really decent for the price.

I love Lagavulin 16, but as you say it's an expensive habit. Bowmore 12 and Highland Park 12 year are not as big a mouthful as Lagavulin but similar ballpark. Talisker are various price points is also a popular alternative but I'm not a big fan.

Ardbeg and Laphroaig are the next best thing after Lagavulin for me, they have a wider range with cheaper options it's worth checking amazon every once in a while their prices move up and down pretty regularly into the £20-30 range. One of Aldi's Glen Marnoch brand is an Islay single malt, wouldn't say it's anywhere near as good as the other 3 but for less than £20 it's definitely worth a try, their whiskies in general for the price are much much nicer than the other cheap end well known brands like Grouse or Grants.

I've yet to see somecunt sipping their beer stood at a poseur table sucking it through their teeth claiming subtle hints of oak and dangleberry.

 

Is that what craft beer is all about ?
