Not much we can do if the player and club can't come to an agreement about it. It could be that Taylor just fancies a new challenge.

I certainly wasn't including you in the stupid and included you to try and find out if you were trolling. What I don't get is why I should be bothered about why my songs could be viewed negatively in certain environments when they are the same songs I have been singing at Celtic games for 30 years. For me these songs are to remember those who gave their lives to build a better world for future generations not to antagonise anybody. I will though bristle at anyone that chooses to describe this as "glorifying terrorism".

Should have had an ultimatum last summer IMO. And if he refused a contract, then he should have been sold and replaced last summer.

"A club open to all" is one of the most misunderstood phrases about Celtic. It was never meant literally, because of course we're not open to racists and so on. It simply means that as regardless of your background or nationality, or any other protected characteristics, you're welcome at Celtic.

It is birthday card pish by folk who are obsessed with the huns. We are no more and have never been more open to all than Halifax, Accrington Stanley or Charlton.

Yeah sectarian was maybe not the fully correct word to use in this context.

But don't you see what you're doing? You're talking down to me becausr i have different values, wether you realise it or not you are. You're regarding me as inferior because I don't share you're belief, that's a sectarian altitude of sorts, admittedly for want of a better adjective. Maybe ignorant would ne a better description.

I don't support Celtic because of the colour or the crest or Kenny Dalglish etc. I support Celtic because I was born into a family with generations of supporting Celtic behind it. Because I was taken to the terracing by said family as a child, and ever since then I have thought about, read about, discussed and watched celtic every day of my life for nigh on 50 years.

If you want to look on me as not your equal because i don't fully embrace or share your beliefs/politics then knock yourself out, but i neither need nor want your pity over it.

It has more to do with the ethos of the club and its foundation.

Brother Walfrid refused to call us Glasgow Hibernian or Glasgow Harps because it would have been seen as exclusively Irish.

He chose the name Celtic because it meant Scottish and Irish.

And we went from there and still go.

I don't think an ultimatum benefits anyone in that situation. Taylor is having a good season and has proven himself as a reliable first team player. By all accounts he's one of the leaders in the dressing room too. If he was happy to stay and play on this season and the manager was happy to play him then keeping him was the right decision. If they can't come to an agreement, or if Taylor simply wants to move on, then that's fine it sometimes works out like that.

My issue is letting Valle go and potentially once again going into the latter half of the season without a backup left back.

You can simultaneously be a Irish nationalist and not embrace or support physical force republicanism.. many of our support fall in to the latter category and I ultimately respect their position, but it isn't my politics as a Irish nationalist (of the O'Connell, Parnell and Hume ideological lineage).

To suggest there's any narrow interpretation of Irish history or nationalism is incorrect.

The club's identity and roots are heavily rooted in Catholic charitable causes.. that doesn't mean you have to directly feel connected to religious and such.

No, and I've never referred to 'glorifying terrorism'. But if I'm going to a place like Birmingham and the crowd in front me may well have had innocent family members blown up by 'the IRA' then I'm not going to sing songs about 'the IRA'. And while I may be able to make an argument about which iteration of army I'm singing about, it kind of doesn't matter to me. Just doesn't feel right. And ultimately its a game of football. It's probably not too different to using my discretion playing other types of music in certain environments where I know people may find it offensive or just a bit weird. It isn't a big deal to me, I just don't think it's the right thing to do.

    I agree 100%

I would partially agree in terms of how some people use it in the present day, but I also think it's an important message that the club has embraced throughout its history, starting from Brother Walfrid, as @Gil-Scott Heron has mentioned above. My personal opinion is that inclusive messages are just as important as they've ever been in wider society, so I am proud that the modern Celtic embraces this while also recognising its past.

My issue is with the idea that Celtic’s political and cultural identity is somehow separate from the club or that embracing it is exclusionary or sectarian. It’s just a fundamental part of what Celtic is.

A huge part of the emotional connection to the club is tied to its history, its politics, its roots, and everything it represents beyond football. That’s where the difference lies.

It’s not about needing to pass some kind of test to be a “real” supporter, but I do think those who fully embrace Celtic’s deeper meaning experience it in a way that others miss out on. That’s not me looking down on anyone - it’s just my perspective. If you see that differently, fair enough, but that’s where I stand. And that’s the “controversial opinion thread” for you!

I don't think any of us really participate in everything Celtic is.

I don't participate in the charity side of it like the GB do. How many of us attend every game like Paul the Tim? I haven't been to a game since the 01/02 season (and yes, I think that does make me a less good fan). Religion is part of our DNA (whether folk like it or not), how many of us live our lives by Christian (or these days also Jewish or Muslim) values instead of the rather different values of the 21st Century west that our founders would probably find appalling? I'm an agnostic FWIW. Knowledge of our footballing history is definitely part of it. I like to read about that; but a ton of people on here know so much more than me. There are still a few who can remember the Lions. Those of us born after that time are missing out on that. The political stuff is part of Celtic too. Some people don't like it, some aren't interested in it and others like it in certain contexts and not others or like it when it's done in certain ways and not others. It's about a certain culture in Ireland and parts of Scotland. I live in England. It's about family connections going back generations. Not every fan has those. It's about so many things I'd be here all day trying to think of them all.

We're all missing out on something with Celtic. It's just much bigger than we are.

Its really encouraging to see a diverse range of opinions as opposed to any and all dissenters automatically shut down and accused of being Huns.
I would like to be better educated by some true fans that suggest alternate views are either ignorant, lacking mental capacity or bigoted?
    So please help me out.
Which of the following is ok and why?
    • Singing about Lizzie in a box - with her grandson in attendance
    • Booing and disrespecting veterans that fought and died fighting the Nazis for all of us
    • Singing songs glorifying terrorists who murdered multiple innocent civilians from 1970's onwards, including Birmingham
    • Singing or chanting about rival football fans who died in a stadium disaster, booing any silence in subsequent years
    • Singing about 'dirty orange *' and anyone protestant in an obviously sectarian manner - despite many of our biggest legends being protestant
    • Consistently ignoring requests and pleas from our club around politics and pyro, leading to multiple fines and a likely ban on away fans - and possibly worse, if it continues

My controversial opinion is that Kyogo had been poor all season and for a bit of time before that and that in time we will improve overall as a team with someone different who offers more on the ball, in that position.

To add to this opinion I don't think he got anywhere near enough criticism for his form and that fans used the tactics excuse too often rather than focusing on the fact he had gone 11 months without an away goal within this past year or so until October IIRC and had 4 goals in 25 games before Ross County. Whilst all the while missing big chances in most games he started.

    *ducks for cover*

This is the truth of it. A lot of the identities and ideologies that come packaged with being a Celtic fan have inherent tensions in them.

There's tension in Irish nationalism. If you support the IRA you're sympathising with terrorists, if you oppose the IRA you're a free-stater. There's tension between the Marxist undercurrent to Irish republicanism and the anti-socialist conservatism of Catholicism. There's tensions between how far those growing up in Scotland are accepted as 'Irish' by those over the water. The Celtic support has never been monolithic even in its core values. Get off the internet and into a supporter's club and you'll see that first hand.

That's why it makes no sense to be exclusive. You can't sing this, you can't be that. * off. Luckily people's gatekeeping only works in their minds. I'll pay my money, scan my ticket, and the turnstile will swing open anyway.

Only thing I can agree about with this mate, is that it's certainly controversial... :56::60:
