Who here keeps an aquarium? What type (cold, tropical or salt water tropical) or do you have a pond you keep fish in? How big? What types of fish?

So we got our son an aquarium for Christmas, he wanted a pet and to be honest I'd always liked the idea of fish. The plan was to go for cold water but after speaking to people we went for tropical as the maintenance is similar and the fish in general look nicer. It's only a 70l tank, which after substrate and ornaments probably has 60l of water.

We have four guppies and will introduce a new breed on Saturday and then a third probably in a month.

I had one for a few years, mostly to keep my kids happy. It was a cold water tank with some white cloud mountain minnows, a couple of snails and shrimp. Put some real moss balls in as well as a few plastic bits and pieces.

The research I did at the time basically said WCMM fish were the easiest to keep alive and keep happy and turned out to be the case and even I managed to keep them alive for quite a while.

I have a 600l tank for my turtle basically same upkeep as tropical fish have some tetras and barbs in there too, I'm going to redo it all new decorations this year, to be honest it's a bit of a faff these days doing water changes and cleaning

Idiotech is the man for tropical fish, his tank is stunning, he posts a few pictures on the wildlife thread from time to time.

Watch the guppies! Depending on your water quality, when they start breeding they don’t stop!

Used to keep them in the house down south, ended up with five tanks!

in Scotland I keep African Cichlids and the Mbuna do very well, regularly breeding and just amazing to watch.

I asked for all males. Apparently nicer looking. Apparently if you put males and females together you should have more females than males as this stops the males fighting over their bird.

I used to have a tank upstairs but the weight of the water made my house lopsided. I had nothing but bristlenose catfish who’d eat cucumber. Eventually I gave them back to the shop because I couldn’t look after them anymore, they just kept breeding and breeding. I wouldnt mind having a smaller tank though with a few fish.

Same with mollies live bearers will over run your tank pretty quickly, endler guppies are really nice but very small add some shrimp for cleaning up and live plants will really set it off, a cannister filter is a good option too

1 full bath every week or 2 and that's only 30% I have to pump it out then fill it with the same temp water, it's not fun, I have 2 huge filters which is a big help but turtles are quite dirty

Bottom, I was thinking panda Corys, ones I was told to introduce after a month. I think we'll have about 10-12 fish. I have some moss balls but no plants. Might add more moss balls.

Furniture wise it's a mess, a 6 year old chose it all, so a dinosaur, a treasure chest, a neon bridge, a neon castle, some stone tunnels and Spongebob.

Brilliant I think all kids should have a pet of some kind when they are young and fish is a good way to start, corys like big groups and need pristine water cracking fish
