Celtic are eyeing a potential swoop for Aston Villa forward sensation Louie Barry this month, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Glasgow giants are keen to sign the 21-year-old on a permanent basis

Barry spent the first half of the 2024-25 campaign on loan with Stockport County but has returned to Aston Villa after a recall.

The young striker has returned to Villa for assessment from Unai Emery but it was widely expected that he would exit the club on another loan

Football Insider revealed on 17 December that Middlesbrough led Leeds United in the race to sign the former Barcelona youngster on a temporary basis.

But Celtic are now set to enter the race for Barry’s signature and are considering a permanent bid for the striker.

He scored 16 goals in 24 games for Stockport in the first half of this season, including 15 in League One.

Barry primarily played on the left wing for the third-tier side and also filled in at centre-forward when needed.

The young striker has scored regular goals in League One and League Two throughout his development, with Villa choosing to send him out to Ipswich, Swindon, MK Dons, Salford and Stockport since signing him in 2020.

Celtic are eyeing reinforcements on the left wing with Luis Palma set to join Rayo Vallecano on an initial loan.

The Hoops can also offer Barry the chance to play Champions League football, with Brendan Rodgers’ side well placed to advance to the knockout stages.

Celtic sit top of the Scottish Premiership and face European clashes against Young Boys and Aston Villa later this month

Looks class. Although even half a season in league 1 down there demands a hefty price tag now. We’ve the money though

I am mindful of the level but some of his dribbling, vision to spot a pass and goals reminds me of a Kuhn just on the opposite side, as a right footer coming in of the left wing.

Apparently his contract has 18 months left on it so the price may not be too astronomical. It is also been mentioned that Villa are not opposed to selling players at a more reasonable fee and including a buy back clause for them what may be viewed as a fair price and could still be seen as a good return for us. Apparently that boy they bought from Hull in the summer was that sort of deal.

Last player we signed in January from league one wasn’t half bad. Get it done

We've been scouting this guy for months it seems. He definitely looks the part. Seems to have everything in his game, and only 21, and at 5'9,' good height too. Would give us solid options on the left wing and at striker.

Good pedigree too, Barcelona and Aston Villa. I would be for this.

He got Kasper before anyone else but can't remember him being particularly reliable before that.

If he comes up here and does double figures for goals and assists he will be worth £25 million next year

    Had a read about him.

This would be a hard one to get over the line I think. Lot of interest down south.

Interestingly played for Barca as a kid. We need 2x wingers so would be interesting to see if we paid £18m or so for two...can't see it. So maybe just one we want?
