So how is it a * take? We'll negotiate towards a good deal for us, as will Arsenal, and we'll agree on something that suits all parties. That is exactly how it's meant to happen. As always it's a case of picking the easy option to demean the club and trot out the tired old Lawwell patter. Boring and lazy as *.

CELTIC are hoping to announce the sensational return of Kieran Tierney on a pre-contract agreement over the next week.

SunSport was ahead of the rest on December 18 by revealing that Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers was set to make his move to bring back the 27-year-old five and a half years after his record £25 million sale to Arsenal

And it’s understood talks are now underway between both parties to make that happen fast with Tierney a free agent in the summer after the Gunners opted not to activate a 12-month option in their favour.

Celtic have wasted no time in swooping at the first official opportunity - very aware of potential strong competition for Tierney’s signature from clubs in the Premier League and abroad who are monitoring his situation and weighing up moves.

But, crucially, the player has long held a desire to return to his boyhood heroes.

And Hoops chiefs are hoping that will prove the deciding factor for the defender who burst into the first team at 17 and won eight trophies, including four titles.

Rodgers immediately placed lifelong Celtic fan and academy graduate Tierney at the top of his January transfer list as soon as the Gunners confirmed they wouldn’t be taking up the further year on his deal.

It immediately left the Scotland star able to open talks with interested clubs from January 1 – and, of course, put Celtic in pole position to secure him on a pre-contract for the 2025-26 campaign.

Tierney spent the whole of last season on loan at La Liga side Real Sociedad but then suffered injury anguish while playing for Scotland at the Euros in Germany.

It kept him side-lined until Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta started him against Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup on December 18.

Tierney came off with cramp but was included in match-day squads for the next three games without coming off the bench.

It’s likely he’ll also be involved in Arteta’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League game at Brighton.

Celtic could also yet pursue negotiations to bring him back north this month.

But, it’s thought the immediate priority is to get an emotional Tierney return guaranteed for next term and there’s a confidence within Parkhead that can be done.

It’ll be exciting to have an overlapping full back on the left hand side again that can actually defend too.

Might help in some situations of breaking a press and getting up the pitch … not all but definitely some.

Valle and Taylor looked like two cheeks of the same backside yesterday in fairness.

I don’t see how anyone could give either of them pass-marks based on that performance- if you could even call it a performance.

If KT stays fit (and I know that’s a big ‘if’) then he absolutely trounces both of them in every single aspect of his game, a hundred times over.

are you okay mate? I know we lost yesterday but * *. How is it demeaning lawell? I was actually saying he’s doing us a solid by going for the best financial offer. An English team will offer them more than we will and we’ll still get Tierney.

    maybe take the day off

Apparently loaned players can be recalled by parent club, if this was greed upon by Celtic & Barça in the initial loan agreement

Big reason why I had maintained that it was unlikely as Barça has never recalled a loaned player early to my recollection - so I am reluctant to believe this clause was agreed upon up front

Celtic are working on a deal to secure the return of Scotland defender Kieran Tierney on a pre-contract agreement.

Arsenal have informed the full-back that they don’t intend to exercise the option of another year on his contract when it expires in June

Despite more lucrative opportunities in bigger leagues, the 27-year-old is willing to take a substantial pay cut to be reunited with his boyhood club.

And discussions over a move before the end of the month could take place once the nuts and bolts of a pre-contract agreement for this summer are in place.

Sold to Arsenal for £25million in 2019, Tierney made the 125th appearance of an injury-hit spell in the recent Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace.

Despite slipping down the pecking order at the Emirates, defensive injuries are likely to see him feature in another match-day squad when the Gunners face Brighton this evening.

Asked whether any players will be allowed to leave in January, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta responded: ‘All the players that are here, they want to focus on performing and impacting the team and, if something happens there, then we will assess it.’

While Arsenal would be open to saving on the last six months of Tierney’s substantial salary, the player himself would need to take a £3m hit to rip up his current contract and return to Glasgow on a permanent basis this month.

While Thursday’s 3-0 defeat to Rangers will intensify calls to get the Scotland defender in before the end of the window, Greg Taylor and Alex Valle currently occupy the left-back slots

The situation could change if Taylor - out of contract this summer and no closer to signing an extension - moves on this month

If he is fit then what a signing. We still need another LB as Taylor looks like he is leaving and Valle doesn't seem too commited beyond the season.

It’s clear we want him and he wants to come back this should be sorted by now. If we have to pay Arsenal a little to get him now, get it done and if Taylor is not signing move him on.

Made it quite clear that I didn't want to sign him but there is no doubt, when he is fit, that he's a level above anything we have in that position. In terms of quality, it's a CCV/Kuhn level signing.

I just really worry about his injury record and I think he's going to be targeted. Either way, we just need to hope he manages to remain fit when he can because I think this is likely to be his last contract. His body is clearly starting to break down as he gets older and it wouldn't surprise me if he retires early.

That being said, you can't help but feel somewhat of an emotional triumph in seeing him come back home. Who, of a Celtic persuasion, wouldn't want to see him back, playing for the team he loves. If little else, it will be a nostalgic dream to see him back home.

Definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, get him in this month. Even if we have to pay a small loan fee to get him in until the Pre-Contract agreement starts in the summer. It will give the club a boost, the fanbase a boost and create a good atmosphere. It was quite clear I was in the minority in not wanting him back but it won't stop me pouring my heart and soul into singing his song when I see him take to the field at Celtic Park.

When it's confirmed, Welcome * home, young man.

I am unbelievably excited by this one.

A Celtic man, desperate to be here - taking huge wage drop.
But the key thing is that he is genuinely a top drawer player, 2 or more levels above what we have
Arguably better than Andy Robertson who is regarded as one of Europe's top full backs.
Can play anywhere across back 4.
    He's 27.
Will eventually be our new captain.

Yes, injuries are a definite worry but assuming a good medical outcome (especially hamstring, his last 3 big injuries), he plays more than he is out.
Looking at injury stats he misses 20 games on average a season out of the 55-60 typically available.
Some major early injuries like hernia, dislocated shoulder, knee op etc...you'd hope are one offs - biggest concern is defo the hamstring.

    Bring him home!!!
