Cummings would likely be getting chances if he agreed a new deal so nothing like Brooks tbf.

If we aren't even approaching him with a new deal it says enough for me.

Haven't watched him but will trust those who see him day in day out. Very difficult position sadly for anyone to break into, here.

Said it earlier in the thread but the fact we're willing to give Johnny Kenny another chance tells me Cummings is all but gone.

No reason not to give Cummings 6 months as third choice striker with the way he's playing if he was willing to stay.

We also shouldn't be holding teenagers to ransom. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life at 18.

Imagine a company told you that, not only is there no chance you'll get a promotion, but, in fact, you'll lose your job as well in 6 months if you don't sign up to a long term contract. I'd probably stick the finger up and walk out the door.

We are basically saying that to an 18 year old and providing virtually no evidence that he'll even get a promotion (first team minutes). It feels like empty promises.

This isn't specifically about Cummings btw. It's essentially what all our youths have to face. He is just the latest example.

    That's a load of bollocks.

You've just quoted a post which highlights three examples of a player (Doak, Vata and Kelly) getting their promotion pretty much at the earliest opportunity only to use the fact their now getting minutes in the first team to get a deal elsewhere.

As for holding players to ransom? Since at least Ange the slightest hint that a player doesn't want to be here and they've been shown the door? Kelly being the perfect example, we could've been dicks about him signing a pre contract with Millwall and kept him rotting away until Jan but we agreed to sell him straight away for the fee we would've got in compo anyway.

Apologies, my response wasn't really in relation to your post. More generally to the thread.

I don't really know what's going on behind the scenes, and it's almost certainly not the way people on here are making it out i.e that he's been told he will only get minutes if he signs on the dotted line. Sadly, that type of thing does happen at a lot of teams. With senior players as well.

Agreed. We absolutely dealt with Kelly's departure in the right way. And there was no chance we were holding onto Doak no matter what we did.

You'll lose your current job in 6 months , once your current contract expires , unless you sign a new contract with us ....wow , unethical stuff , you're right ! Poor teenagers.

That's not the part that is the problem. Cummings has scored 24 goals in half a season, he's clearly doing a job that is way beneath him. The dillemma he has is that if he signs onto a new contract, there is no guarantee he won't continue in exactly the same role. Hence why he is probably contemplating leaving.

Maybe he can break the mould and start a trend. Fingers crossed.

Cummings is battering them in for the B Team. He is physically strong, tall, good on the turn, and has a bit of pace about him.

Jonny Kenny is also physically strong and tall, doing great on loan too and scoring goals. I would give both of them a chance to break through in the New Year into the first team squad.

I've no interest in us signing a third striker, unless we accepted a bid for Kyogo in the transfer window.

Has anyone seen him play at all? Not seen anything outwith highlights, linked to good moves and has a bit of hype around him the now, is it warranted?

I watched a decent chunk of the Glasgow Cup final and he took his goal very well. He was busy in the game but didn’t have any other real other chances of note.

There was a 25 minute spell in the second half where Celtic were playing really nice stuff throughout the team. Quick 1 or 2 touch football right throughout the team and he did try come off the front and get involved. Cummings done ok at this but wasn’t as comfortable as most of the others. He did still work hard to be involved. At only 18 there are bits of his game to work on but as his numbers suggest if you give him a chance near the box he seems lethal.

I would need to see more of him to see if that is typical or just that one performance.

If Rodgers is willing to switch to 2 up top, let's see what he can do from the bench.

That's a good suggestion. He couldn't be any worse than Kyogo, who is missing far too many sitters.

Watching Sportscene from the other night, I was left thinking:

Does the emergence of the boy James Wilson at Hearts - fully a year younger than Daniel Cummings, playing the same position, and developing nicely with game time - suggest that we’re wasting Cummings’ potential by neither loaning him out nor giving him minutes ourselves?

The answer is yes. And it’s always yes, hearts could have persisted with Shankland just cos it’s Shankland but fare * to the manager on bringing Wilson in even at the age he is. If Cummings was playing for anyone else he’d probably be getting games too.

I think there’s a reluctancy for other prem teams to take youngsters in the 16-18 range off us because their own youngsters will probably see it as taking away their development chances. So we then have to loan to the championship and lower.

at 16/17/18 they just need the chance to show they’re good enough and get a run of games going. You look across the league and there’s a few examples in most teams.

and I still think there’s room for more chances if teams lose those journeyman English lower league players and trust in youth

I think we'll start giving youngsters more games in the cups next season. This year was about making progress in Europe and smashing any records Sevco pretended they have.

We need to start giving some youngsters a chance, and I'm ok with it if we miss out on a cup or 2 to do it.
