You wanna get excited over him coming inside and playing 5 yard sideways and backwards passes and managers having to adapt their systems to accommodate him you charge on.

He's a left back who for 5 years has been consistently found out defensively against anyone with pace or power or half decent technique. He can't beat a player, can count on 1 hand the number of times he gets to the byline, his crossing is * and is terrified of passing the ball forward.

As a Celtic left back hes nowhere near good enough and never has been.

Would be starting Valle against St Johnstone, would be a good game to give Taylor a rest but also give Rodgers a decision on who to start against the huns.

He was excellent against Dundee United but poor today, gifted the ball away countless times in the first half.

I suspect Taylor is working his ticket. These suicidal cross field passes are strange and bizarre.

If that's the case, we better not play him at Ibrox :giggle1:

Again, nowhere even close to the truth. No one has ever said he doesn't have flaws but he's been a brilliant signing for us overall. I can think of at least five goals from memory where his crossing has been anything but '*'. He's always been a better player than much of the support give him credit for, evidenced by the fact that we've signed several other left backs who have been unable to displace him.

Every game for the last 8 or 9 games he's played a suicidal ball across the defence that is easily cut out by the opposition.

Teams are picking up on his tendencies. Sevco pressed him, and all started running forward, knowing fine well he'd pass it across the back line. Its a major weakness that's being exploited. He needs to cut that out and in those situations, go back to the keeper and avoid that pass.

That only shows your bias against him then. It's indisputable he's been a key player for us for several seasons and the previous three Celtic managers have seen his value.

    Bias?? That's * * pish.

Would appear majority of Celtic fans and opposition managers who continually target him would share my bias.

Brilliant?? Give us a * break

Yeah you're just proving my point. He's not pish and never has been. Three Celtic managers in a row have had him as a regular starter. Remember Jota in a post match interview talking about how brilliant he had been for the team? Usually a good sign when your teammates rate you highly.

I actually prefer the style of Valle, but let's not try to rewrite reality by pretending Taylor hasn't been great for us for over 5 years now, including two seasons where he had a legitimate claim to POTY.

    Edited to add:

Yeah you definitely have an unhinged level of bias against Taylor. These aren't the words of someone judging a player rationally.

Is there actually a debate raging in here as to whether Greg Taylor is good enough to be our first choice LB?

    Really?

There's no debate, given that he's been a successful first choice left back for the club for 4 and a half seasons now, including two seasons where he was a genuine POTY candidate.

The combination of him maximising his ability and our inability to find a proper LB has culminated in GT being a mainstay in our team for 5 years.

If I rated his time here on a scale of 1-10, I'd give him a 6. He's an adequate player in the build-up play, works hard and has a decent engine. But he's undoubtedly a poor defender who struggles with the basics against anyone with a bit of pace, power or trickery. I also think his build-up play goes out the window against better quality opposition (see Europe where he constantly loses possession).

He's not a conventional overlapping LB and never has been - this has done wonders for him under 2 managers, as it masks his attacking and defensive deficiencies whilst highlighting the better aspects of his game.

I just don't think the juice is worth the squeeze anymore. I miss seeing fullbacks overlapping and whipping crosses into the box. I miss seeing fullbacks driving and dribbling past players. I miss seeing fullbacks stopping crosses and winning duels on a consistent basis.

Taylor has done very, very well for himself to last this long. But ultimately he's an average (at best) player who needs replaced if we want to push on.

He is a 'proper LB'. He's proven himself as being good enough over several seasons and none of the other left back signings have been able to shift him. If managers didn't rate him, he wouldn't have featured so frequently. Folk need to accept that he's been good enough, rather than trying to pretend he's only played because of recruitment failure.
6 is unbelievably harsh. A bargain of a signing who has been consistently good for 4 and a half seasons so far. This very thread has far more positive remarks about his contributions than negative.

A poor defender who struggles with the basics is just nonsense, same with the part about his build up play in Europe considering his part in the best performance of our season so far (Leipzig). Every one of our players lose possession in Europe, because it's a difficult level.
Average at best is a lot of *, he's been a stand out performer for us in so many games and consistently across full seasons. It's crazy that some just won't give him the credit he rightly deserves. He isn't regularly overlapping but that doesn't mean he can't do it (2-1 League Cup win vs Huns for example). Even much more recently he his a cross into Aberdeen's box at Pittodrie that helped us win the game.

I think he wants to go and I would love an improvement in his position (I'd love improvements in any position tbh), but comments like '* *' or 'average at best' are disingenuous relative to the level of performance he's put in during his Celtic career.

He will play against Huns, always does. Some of his passing recently has been beyond poor-simple basic bread and butter passes and he makes a * of it. Sick to the back teeth of suffering him, week in week out.
