I’m starting to find this quite frustrating as an issue because it boils down quite simply to a lack of ability.

All the boys with enough talent are 9/10 whipped away by English clubs and the only ones special enough recently to push the boat our for were Doak and Hepburn.

Fair enough theres no obvious pathway but I could give you Doak, Kelly, Vata, Hepburn, Morrison who would have first team minutes in the last two years if they stayed with us.

I hate this idea that you chuck a young boy on at 3-0 up at home when he’s not even good enough or earned it.

Pretty simple - keep our best talents and our best talent will get a chance if they earn it.

Just out of curiosity, how are players like Doak, Kelly, Vata, Hepburn, Morrison, etc., getting on at their new clubs anyway?

I know Doak is doing fairly well at Middlesbrough on loan, and Vata is watching Millwall games from the stand, but haven’t really followed their progress closely at all!

What we need is another Quality Street Gang where we have multiple players who have the ability, talent and determination plus patience to come through the ranks but also a proper management team that will give them that chance.

Karamoko Dembele - Currently at QPR. 12 appearances, 3 assists, 1 goal this season. Currently out with an injury for the past 10 games.

Ben Doak - On Loan at Boro. 13 appearances, 5 assists, 1 goal. Starts most games.

Daniel Kelly - Millwall. 14 minutes from 2 sub appearances, in 16 games. Usually on their bench.

Rocco Vata - Watford. 8 appearances but mostly as a sub. 0 goals or assists.

Liam Morrison - Released by Bayern but now at QPR after a loan spell at Wigan. Made his first appearance 5 games ago and looks to have started the last four league matches for QPR.

Barry Hepburn - Released by Bayern. Currently without a club as far as I can see online.

If we had a down vote button, this is one of those posts.

What you've said makes little sense, yet at the same time is the same thing we do currently that is actually the issue.

We hold on to youth talent til they are 18/19 and don't give them a chance, hence they leave.

That's the issue we need to fix. Not just stick with the status quo and assume it will magically happen one day.

    Cheers for the detailed response.
That’s right, it was Kelly to millwall and Vata to Watford! :52:

It’ll be interesting to see if any of them go on to have a good career.

For some, it seems they’ve realised that the grass is always greener!

They need game time, frankly I think it's harmed by how good our squad is an our desire to win trebles. We don't risk any league cup games and we've got so much depth to rotate with.

If you consider the young players who have come through, it's always due to gaps in the squad or an injury crisis.

Tierney - Emilio had lost it and every other LB we signed flopped.
Ralston - The other option was Jonjoe Kenny
Welsh - Centre back crisis, has since fallen out.
McGregor - Played a range of positions when players were out before finally settling.

The players coming through aren't good enough, but they won't be unless they're given a lot of chances and game time.

Failing that bring back Ronny D

The best players are gone by the time they are 16. So unless you’re happy to chuck underdeveloped, not hood enough young boys on the park just as a token gesture then fair play but that isn’t the mentality of a world class club imo.

I think the issue is having clear plans for the best young boys that gives them the best chance of coming through, so that they might see it as a better option than England. The money they offer even boys they know son’t make it for them is silly down there. O’Dea appears to have sorted good loans out this year for once.

If we can’t find a way to keep those best 15/16 year olds I think its gonna be tough to bring anyone of note through unless you get a late bloomer like a Tierney.

The days of bringing a proper high level player through might be gone.

Also intrigued to ask the question about who recently should have been playing more before leaving.

Doak getting minutes at 16 and left first chance he got, Kelly was getting good minutes then wouldn’t sign a deal. Vata played a few games but again contracts were rumbling on behind the scenes and its no secret he was a wee * off the park.

Can’t believe Hepburn is without a club after leaving for Bayern! Unbelievable no one has wanted to take him on

Ironically, we'll probably have more youngsters on the bench tonight for a much harder game precisely because the Champions League have homegrown player rules.

Europe alone should be incentive enough for us to produce/sign the best young Scots as we will then be able to actually fill a matchday squad

I've said for years, others as well, build a squad for Europe and it'll walk the domestic scene.

If we take the above core group and dust it with the additional 5 or so youth talent, then it's great.

Our issue comes (and still slightly exists just now), is when we have over saturated the first team squad to the point that our youth talent doesn't get a look in.

Rather less of the bought in foreign talent of squad filler, in favour of great foreign quality and complimented with our youth.
The better quality will help bring on the youth as well - because lord knows our youth coaching isn't doing that job.

Today's bench, 2 fullbacks and 3 CBs, one of which is Nawrocki who is by all accounts bombed out the squad and likely to leave.

That, there, is one of the big reasons our youth don't get a chance and will leave at the first chance.

Can't even get one youngster on that bench, but we can get an entire backline +a spare CB on it.

Yeah it would be good to see even one player get the opportunity on the bench, especially in some domestic games.
