I said pretty much exactly what you have the other day regarding dropping him. I can see why he started midweek though. Why wouldn’t you go with the same team that completely dismantled Leipzig?

There have been some already jumping the gun though. One guy on here even thinks he is working his ticket to get out. That’s just wild.

I think there are enough positive voices about Engels to stay positive. There was genuine hype around him when we signed him, and lots of commentators were surprised he didn't go to a better league. Rodgers and the Belgian national team see something in him.

We clearly haven't seen it yet, and honestly it were could sell him for 11m tomorrow I'd get our money back, but there's still a decent chance he will come good.

That only complaint I have. When eduardo and Bernardo signed. They had sit on bench and adapt to Scottish football with subs appearance.
This guy starts every week and his confidence is suffering now.
He needs wee spell on bench and fight for his place.

Is it coincidence that the first half against hearts and the first half against brugge we were dire with Engels in midfield and he gets subbed and Bernardo comes on and we hit 4 goals against hearts and score within 2 minutes of Bernardo being on .

You can see has inherent qualities so I have no qualms about him at all - he will develop and get there no doubts about it.

However, at the moment, he seems to be a bit short of confidence and going missing for large period of games. Both for him and the team, it would be worthwhile putting him on the bench for a few weeks.

What’s clear to me is that Bernardo is ahead of Engels on the development curve so should be starting for me.

Rodgers makes that argument about "look at Bernardo now", but he still picks Engels ahead of him now.

the way rodgers was talking its like he thinks the fans are all writing engles off, the way he mentions bernardos struggles etc. but here's the thing not 1 of us is actually writing engles off we are all majority in agreement he needs time out to find his feet and have a wee reset and fight for his place. especially at this moment when bernardo is streets ahead of him. think brendan playing engles is proof that he's being stubborn and it's about his ego rather than the good of the team. this can also be said of valle/taylor also, although valle is on loan so that could be a factor in his decisions to play taylor but with engles and bernardo it's a no brainer that bernardo is contributing way more.

Would you have changed the team that pumped Leipzig?

    Brendan is absolutely right here

Hopefully he is on the bench today, this will take some heat of the lad and there is nothing better than coming on for the last 30 minutes when they are tiring to get a goal or two.
That will do his confidence the world of good.

He needs to buck his ideas up if he wants a future here at Paradise.

We have a surplus of very good midfielders now, and he can't live on the back of a £11M tag forever.
Good to see Brendan benched him today, for the protection of the player himself.

I swear Brendan has a log in here on this forum, because he seems to react to the suggestions/criticism,evaluations on Talk Celtic

Rodgers will start him v Aberdeen and probably be proved right in doing so.

    We will see.

You said that on Wednesday too and it didn't work out. I don't think a midfield of Engels, McGregor and Hatate works, it becomes disjointed.

If you are talking about Engels at No.6, then now you are talking.Otherwise I suspect we are flogging a dead horse if Engels is saddled with No.8.

The same midfield was also superb v Leipzig and tore Aberdeen to shreds in the LC semi..

Don't get me wrong he was rightly dropped today and McCowan and Bernardo have been brilliant..

I just think Rodgers brings Engels back on Wed but that isn't to say he is an automatic 'big game pick' .

Rodgers has asked for a big commitment from the board with Engels, he won't be left out much.

But, I do also have faith in Engels. He's shown quality, just needs to find consistency.

The depth in midfield is excellent, so it's all good.

What is it with the fanbase to pick on someone every week? He's a cracking player going through a difficult patch. Nearly every player on that pitch had the same critique of them at some point but sometimes gets absolutely absurd! Be grateful for where we are, we could by like the other lot having about 3/4 of their team out of form

This incessant need to jump on someone as a scapegoat every week is * baffling.
