Hard to argue there. This time last year i didn't really "get" Bernardo. In February I was slaughtering Kuhn for what seemed like hiding in a match.

Engels needs time, one thing I'll say though is for the price tag you'd expect a little more from him at the domestic level we play at. We were all hoping for a great player who could be amazing, not a player who needs a lot of development to handle the Scottish game.

Can I just ask you about Arne Engels as well? There's a debate about his recent performances and whatnot. When he comes with a price tag, fans may expect a bit more, but you also have to look at the age of the player. 21, still kind of raw. Should fans be a bit more patient to see the growth that Arne will bring?

Yeah, I know in life it is a challenge now for anyone, but I think the most recent example of that would be Paulo Bernardo. He was exactly the same, if I remember back. Highlighting Paulo in his performances this time last year, and now he can't be cheered on loud enough when he enters onto the pitch. That's called development. It's called patience. It's called time. Arne is a fantastic young player, otherwise we wouldn't have brought him here. He doesn't set the price. He's come here to a big club to improve his game. I've got absolutely no doubt he will do that. But hopefully, I know it won't be the case, but I would hope that people will learn their lesson. Seeing people that were writing off Paulo and Nicolas Kuhn, it'll be Arne Engels, it'll be someone else. You have to look and see and understand that development takes time. Some will hit the ground running and be fine and adapt perfectly, but not everyone is like that, especially a young player. I've been really pleased since he's come in, because I know the future for him. He will improve, he will develop and get better. We've seen it so many times

After reading Suttons piece in the record, im fully convinced hes either a member here, or pops in to gauge fan opinions.

And regarding Engels, hes absolutely right.

Football supporters, full stop, have a tendency to write off players based on a few * games. Engles is a development player, hes talented af, but nowhere near the finished article. He needs time, alot of time.

I didnt write of kuhn, but theres been plenty of players in a celtic shirt i labelled pish, and was happy to be proved wrong.

I raged at the signing to Leigh Griff, he was amazing at his peak.
I wrote off Lustig as a walking disaster. Thought Kelvin Wilson was cheap option. I called Giakomakis an unproven mucklord.

More recently i labelled Trusty as an bullshit CB who we got ripped for.

The point being that we're too quick to judge players. Sutton is absolutely right when he says we're attaching far too much value on his price tag, believing it justifies the demand that he be a finished article. Hes not, and 11m doesnt but you that these days. Give the boy time.

Luckily, we're not as bad as der hun, those loopy * wanted to send Igamane ie whatever the * is name is, in loan to Ross County last week. Now hes hes a 30m superstar, cuz he scored against a Nice B-team in a second tier European competition.

Brendan Rodgers is in no doubt that record signing Arne Engels will prove any doubters wrong at Celtic.

The 21-year-old Belgium international joined the Hoops from Bundesliga side Augsburg for a reported £11m fee.

Despite impressive performances in his first few appearances for the club, he has recently been criticised for a perceived drop in form.

That has led to a clamour among sections of the support for Paulo Bernardo to get a run in the starting line-up.

But Rodgers has seen enough from Engels to be convinced he will go from strength to strength and be a star for the Scottish champions

Speaking on Friday, the manager said: “Playing here is a challenge for anyone. The most recent example of that would be Paulo Bernardo.

“He was exactly the same if I remember back, highlighting his performances at this time last year, and now he is cheered on loudly whenever he enters the pitch.

“That’s called development, that’s called patience, and it’s all about time. Arne is a fantastic young player, otherwise we wouldn’t have brought him here.

“He doesn’t set the price, he’s come here to a big club to improve his game, and I have absolutely no doubt he will do that.

“I hope that people will learn their lesson. The same people who were writing off Paulo and Nicolas Kuhn will now be Arne Engels or someone else. You have to look and see that development takes time, and some more than others.

Some players will hit the ground running and adapt perfectly. But not everyone is like that, especially a young player.

“I’ve been really pleased since he came in, because I know the future for him is that he will improve and develop and get better. We have seen it so many times

I don't think Bernado is a good comparable example cited by Brendan, because I think Bernado always showed promise and developement. Kuhn yes I can agree with, but Kuhn did not come with an £11M price tag. Engels is an £11M enigma as far as I am concerned. He looked a really good DM in his YT's with Augsburg, but Brendan is determined to play Engels as an attacking midfielder which goes against the grain, and as a result Engels is looking like a fish out of water, and finding it very difficult to adapt. The obvious solution to me is to push McGregor forward and give Engels the No.6 position, otherwise Engels might never make it here.

Do you remember all those times you were adamant he was only 20?

To be fair, fans were 50/50 on Bernardo, so he is correct about that. I remember the poll on here and I’m sure it was very close for and against singing him.

Was that poll not about whether to sign him or Idah?

I thought it was about both them mate. Don’t think it was unanimous that everyone wanted Bernardo (or Idah) for that matter. Can’t remember if it was done after the season finished or not.

Almost certain it was about which one of the 2 to buy. So 50% isn't bad. I voted Idah but more glad we got Bernardo in all honesty. Still no real qualms about Idah other than we paid over the odds.

Not impressed by Engels at all, Rodgers looks to be digging a hole for himself on him.

I still think he'll come good as he has the technical ability quite clearly, but mentally there's definitely question marks. Goes through the motions and doesn't look to have that doggedness to take a game by the scruff of the neck.

Hopefully he starts to get a bit more fire in his belly and starts putting on a show.

Think it’s extremely early to be writing off Engels. He hasn’t even played double digit league games for us yet. It’s not even like he has been poor in all them either. Similar to Europe, he has only made 5 appearances. Has one goal and 3 assists.

No one's writing him off. That's just Daily Record hyperbole.

He's not played very well and isn't deserving of starting, bring him on later in the game if all is looking good.

It's not rocket science and pretty much standard management. Happened to Bernardo, Kuhn and Idah last season. Just Rodgers has obviously went out on a limb and is mismanaging the situation. It's not helping Engels either I'd add. Even his corners are getting worse.

Guys a talent and I've no concern that he will step up and be a big part of the midfield as the season goes on.

Got to remember a few things, he came in late in the window - missed preseason with us, much like Idah, he's needing time to adjust from being at one club during my early seasons and to another club and playing a different way.
He's as till very young and only 21 and very much a developing talent. Fully expect ups and downs. But the downs aren't all that terrible.

He just needs game managed a little better and needs dropped to help him as much as help the squad.
