Celtic Football Club is pleased to announce a number of new developments within its Academy structure.

Former Celtic captain Stephen McManus has been confirmed as the club’s B Team Head Coach, with Darren O’Dea recently moving to the role of Celtic’s Professional Player Pathway Manager.

We are delighted to now announce that Stephen will be supported by Jonny Hayes, who will take up the role of B Team coach.

Adam Ashgar, previously Southampton’s Under-21 head coach, has joined Celtic as lead coach with our U18 team. Adam will be joined by Chris Hendry as U18 coach. Chris has been with the Academy for a number of years and now takes on this new role.

Chris McCart, Head of Celtic’s Youth Academy, said: “We are really pleased to announce these new appointments.

"Our B Team will be in great hands under Stephen and we are delighted that Jonny has joined the coaching team to assist in the development of our young players.

"Adam has great coaching experience, too, so we are pleased to welcome him to Celtic to work alongside Chris Hendry who has a wealth of knowledge of the Academy.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers added: “We are delighted to makes these new appointments.

"Stephen is an excellent coach who knows the club inside out and he will do a fantastic job as our B Team Head Coach, and I am really pleased to welcome Jonny back to Celtic. I know his ability, energy and his passion for developing younger players will be really useful to us.

“We are also delighted to welcome Adam and Chris to their new roles and I am sure they will be very successful in working with our U18 players and giving them that opportunity to progress through our levels at Celtic, a hugely important area for us and something we want to see more and more of in the future

Finally announcing Ashgar, who was lined up 2 months ago along with the usual names being shuffled in the pack again, painted as good news.

Must be no other news expected for awhile then.

At least they're doing SOMETHING with the youth academy. Need to give them a chance to do what they've been set out to...

There's a strong case for folding the academy altogether - it's not working.

Any player that does seem promising either
    a) isn't afforded enough first team exposure
    b) are hoovered up by teams in more popular leagues due to playing * football with us vs normal working guys due to there being no reserve league.

Be as well investing more in the senior side.

I disagree on folding the academy being worth considering, but even it I didn't do we not have an obligation to have a development squad to qualify for competing in certain competitions, which means we need an academy of sorts?

If we need to keep it for some reason that would otherwise impact on the first team then fair enough. Though from the outside, the academy isnt producing/or being held back to the point where you wonder, why bother.

Fair enough. I can see why you say that. I'd argue the point where we stop trying to develop our own talent is a point where we'd lose a large part of our identity.

I'd far rather we have less success and promote more youth players than do that. Although perversely if done right I think it would increase our chances of success.

I'd also like us to take a more positive approach to developing youth players as currently, we like pretty much every club treat them as commodities.

Giving a pathway to those that don't make it as professional footballers to something else would be a start.

What a blast from the past. What the * has happened to Dane Murray? Is he not 36 now? Feel like he last played years ago

He was out injured for two years with two really bad injuries, doing pretty well for Queens Park and scotland u21s atm.

Having a very good loan spell by all accounts too. I’d send him to a Premiership team next year and then see what he’s got
