Aiden McGeady

Totally agree McGeady's ability to run at pace with the ball and get behind defenders was so crucial to the success we had with Strachan. When he was on top form his ability in tight spaces with the ball was incredible.

One of my favourite ever players, the cup final against them O’Dea scored as well as McGeady, him playing in the 10 running riot and the 1-0 Benfica game he scored and ran riot abiding memories

I think if he had better shooting and crossing he could've gone to one of the truly top teams.

 

Totally agree with you there. McGeady was a truly gifted winger for us and for Ireland. The 2 areas that held him back from being at a level of world class was his inconsistency with his crossing and his pretty mediocre goalscoring record for such a good attacking player. A top player who was a joy to watch in full flight but not quite world class based on his inconsistent final ball and his average goal return.

He was erratically good with both, but he was a numbers sort of player. He could set up more than Naka on the other side, but he would try 20 times a game, Naka 3/4 when it was on and be successful. Aiden with 20 might get 4/5 on a good day.

 

He was one of my favourite players too. So silky. Just a natural, skillful baller. With his ability, he should have achieved/gone further in the game.

 

Underrated amongst the support for me.
Him and Naka a massive reason we done back to back last 16 CL. 2 players who could create something from nothing even against sine of the best teams in the world. I don’t think we’ve had a winger as good as them since…

To me, he had a lot of raw talent but never quite pushed on to great level. I always wonder if the Russian move was at the wrong time development wise?

Having said that, I always liked the bloke (especially as an Ireland fan) and he came across as a decent guy on the Sunderland doc.

 

Came across really well in that Sunderland doc.

Took a heap of undeserved * for choosing Ireland over Scotland. Couldn't have been easy.

Think the reality is if he had a better agent or guidance he'd have had a better career. Sort of talent we don't often see in Scotland.

 

Think Russia was the wrong move for him at the time, but it allowed us to buy the core of what was one of the most enjoyable teams we've had this century.

Always was, and still am, a big fan of him as a player. And as a Celtic man. Sure he had spells of blandness, but when he turned it on he was world class at times.

Love the bhoy for that assist for Scott Mcdonald alone, up in Pittodrie. And of course defying the racist * in Scotchlannnd.

 

Absolutely loved Aiden one af a very small group that I followed their career even after leaving us.
