Is there a benefit for a football club to hold so much money in the bank? Interest or share prices? Curious more than anything.

Overall its good deadwood has gone but what happened to the money BR had available before selling MoR? Only time will tell the success of a transfer window though.

The point on Idah was an interesting one, we did overpay for him, but you could look at it from a different perspective, it was clearly a player Rodgers wanted and we were willing to overpay to get him. Not even slightly overpay, we overpaid by around £3 million.

Of course the argument against that was, with a better scouting network, we could have potentially found a better striker for far less, but if Idah is the player Rodgers wanted, then I think I can live with overpaying, let it be a lesson learned.

Can someone please explain exactly how we "overpaid" for Idah?

I really like Idah mate, so don't take my post as a knock on him :67: but I don't think he was worth £9.5 million.

He was closer to £6 million for me, but even then I'm fine with us overpaying, as it's the player Rodgers wanted.

with £100m doing nothing in a bank we could have offered him a much better contract and done away with the ridiculous wage cap which keep us from from ever improving .we sold oriley and brought in a replacement at a third of the price ,that aint something we should all be down paying homage to

I think you're being a bit harsh here, I think it was clear O'Riley was ready to leave, and when we're stuck in the SPFL, keeping players of O'Riley's talent for longer than 3 years is near impossible.

Getting Engels for £11 million is something that should be lauded, but it shouldn't be a one off, I'm not expecting every signing to be that high but we should be shopping in that market again. If Hatate leaves next year his replacement should be close to Engels value.

One window does not make a change of policy, yes some good players in but would it have been the same if we had not sold a 30 million player first.
If we dont have any big sale next summer and sign another 8-10 million player or players i will maybe start to beleive we have changed how we operate.
Years of getting * over by them leaves me reluctent to trust and give gredit yet.

Whatever the last accounts would have said, plus the "considerable more" I believe was the claim when announced to the stock market how much money we was making.

We've clearly had more than 70m to be able to spend (100% not saying to spend it all of course), and then some.

I don't believe they do because it was the first in many year, where they actually did the basics of their job. I think this should have been the standard form many years, especially those where we had direct entry into CL. They have neglected the weaknesses in the team for years, so before I praise them, they need to show for some seasons that they have up'ed their game and now do the minimum you can expect from a club of our size. Ah, and yes, set up a professional recruitment structure!

If you applaud the minimum too much they just sit down and we reverse back to average.

I think there are many elements to this. On one hand, our scouting can be seen as top class. MOR for 1.5m gets developed into a 25m player in a couple of seasons. That is the perfect scenario and we have been doing that arguably since VVD and Wanyama. We want a better investment for players to compete in Europe, considering our poor show that's a fair request.
The jump we make to an 11m player on big wages is a risk and a lot is going to be asked of Engels or I should say, alot will be expected of him in order for this transfer to be a success like Matt O'Reilly's.
The big deal is, if Celtic is a plc with no ambition for its fans then that is unacceptable, and that's whats at the back of everyone's minds, thats why Lawwel gets it in the neck.

We must see improvement every five years, smart investment and results in Europe.

I think we could have offered MOR £10k more than Brighton are paying him and he’d still have moved.

He’s outgrown the league. It happens.

I dont expect a pat on the head for doing my job; and im paid buttons for the hours i put in and the stress it causes.

Im not gonna start sucking their dicks for them FINALLY doing theirs, and doing it reluctantly i might add.

Theyve done the minimum required. Ill keep the champagne on ice until they do it again, and again, and again...

Don't think it can be argued that they don't, they've backed Rodgers with quality and paid for it..

They need to recognise the need for change in structure though as one good window in 4 isn't acceptable.

Not sure we can say they've done the minimum, breaking our transfer record with Engels and paying what was required for Idah, is more than expected..

The statement I believe is ridiculous, you can't win with that mentality. Norwich obviously took the *, and held the power to do so. We got the player who is proven to be worth the risk.

I think that would of been what we was expecting before selling MoR.

You hit the nail on the head right there.

Theyve done more than expected, because we rightly expect * all from them.

I dont see breaking our transfer record as some sort of reputational boost for them, it shouldve been broken 10 times over by now.
Every time we rake in a 15m + transfer fee, at least 50% of that shouldve be used to fund a replacement, not 4 punts at 2m a pop.

As i said, theyve done their job, not perfectly (no permanent LB solution, no "real" dm, no winger) but theyve done it. Ill wait to see if they keep doing it, or go right back to type, of short changing the manager and fans.

I take, this could be the start of something different.

But only if we kick on. The start took far too long to get going in this window alone.

But if this is the start of continued streamlining of the squad, continued investment of 30m on 3-5 player each summer, a recruitment structure of sorts that is working for the squad and not for the balance sheet (alone). Then yeah we could be on to something. But years upon years leaves most thinking this is too little too late and won't be backed up further on.

That said, I'm with you, if we do back Rodgers in this way, continuously every window/year, then I can see him staying for years and years to come.

He will walk the domestic scene, but if he truly feels he is making small steps in Europe each year, he will be happy to continue to grow our club.
Think he knows he's not getting a Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern level club again (Liverpool previously), so will be happy being a hero and icon at this club that he supports.

Ten years down the line if we are making knockout stages and sneaking towards semi finals of the UCL, I think he would be happy.

That said, we need to look to what's happening with clubs dropping in to Europa, is that out the picture now? As a tangent, that could be a negative for clubs like Celtic who won't realistically win the UCL at all, but would enjoy a run in the Europa, which we wouldn't ever get in to if we keep winning the Scottish league and improve the coefficient points meaning we get auto UCL participation every year.
